Eight Things About Trek

Star Trek

8. Tribbles

They’re cats on crack, and strangely adorable. And have no effect on Spock.

7. The Context

This show started in 1966. It had a black woman on the bridge, and a Russian. Seriously. Just think about that for a second. Not only is this the middle of the Cold War (and features Chekov saying constantly how great Russia was, and how everything was invented in Russia) but also the Civil Rights movement. Martin Luther King Jr. actually told Uhura’s actress to stay on the show when she talked about quitting. I mean, this wasn’t a joke. This vision of the future that showed up at this time, is kinda really utterly amazing.

6. The Themes

This show isn’t just fluff. Not that I mind the fluff, or adventure stories, but Star Trek managed to make it something more. It gives the stories more meat, and makes them more worth watching.

5. Scotty Wears a Kilt

Scotty in general is just amazing. But the fact that his dress uniform features a kilt… makes me happy.

4. Time Travel

Exploring the present through the past or future. Plus, it’s a great way to change up locations. Plus… San Francisco in the 1980s. “We’re looking for the nuclear wessels!” “What is this, the dark ages?” Every other time they traveled was good too, but I have special memories of that one.

3. KHAN!

I need say no more.

2. Spock

Ah, logic. I have an action figure of Spock on my desk. I think that people need more logic in their lives (but not to go so far as to ignore emotions all together) but it’s very important. Plus, watching him deal with humans is just hilarious.

1. Doctor McCoy

(I mean, just look at the way he's sitting in this picture.)

I love this man. He might hold the place of “favorite male fictional character” in my heart. I watch about half the show just for him. There are certain scenes where he smiles and his whole face lights up and it just makes me happy (especially when he’s doing it around Spock). He’s certainly not a perfect character, and tends to get mind-raped more than anyone else and never talk about it (freaking ever). But the way he cares and is passionate about things are just some of the things I love so much about him.
