“I'm far more impressed with nuances than I am with niceties. That’s how I fell in love with Cain.”

“I’m not sure I understand.”

Feminine laughter reached Cain from his spot crouched behind the kitchen island, just under the spot where his mother was having coffee with his wife. He’d been fixing the nearby sink when they wandered in, hidden from view as they used the island sink to fix their drinks. He was going to let them know he was there…he really was…but then the conversation turned to him, and he couldn’t help himself.

“You’d understand if you’d seen Cain the day he was dropped on my doorstep.” Felicia continued with a sigh. Cain could see the expression he knew she was wearing in his mind’s eye: wistful and content as she remembered a day he didn’t think she had any business being happy about. “The lift of that chin, the way he squared his shoulders…he had attitude to spare, that boy, but he was so damn strong. That rebel wasn’t without a cause, he had the biggest damn chip on his shoulder and he wanted that thing knocked the hell off just so he could work off a little steam.”

“Sounds like he was a handful.”

“And a half. Wouldn’t do a blessed thing without a fight, and lemme tell ya, shug, it was hard as hell to knock his head in line without knockin’ that fight out of him. Didn’t wanna break his spirit, that’s what happens with a lotta these kids. Sometimes they never get it back, either. Not my Cain…he had a lotta common sense. I just had to help him learn to listen to it.”

Claire’s laugh rang out, making his lips twitch with a near smile.

“I can sort of see it in Felicity. Already, she’s a handful…stubborn like Cain, and loud.”

“Hard to live with, ain’t it?” Felicia snickered.

There was a pregnant pause, making Cain wonder what was going on up top. Fucking hell, if he could just see…

“You know? It’s really not.”

He held his breath for no good reason other than he wanted to hear more.

“Truth be told? I think if he were tamer, he’d be boring.” she went on, the smile in her voice. “I mean…he may be a little crazy, but he’s mine. That’s all I need to be able to deal with it.”

Cain’s jaw clenched with annoyance at the accusation. What the fuck was she talking about, crazy?! She had a lot of nerve talking shit about him when she didn’t even know he was there to defend…himself…

It took him a moment, but he finally stopped to listen…and heard the barely stifled giggles from both women.

“You dizzy bitches.” He growled through clenched teeth, shifting to get to his feet. “What the fuck was that about?!”

Claire slid off her stool, laughing as she moved to wrap her arms around his waist. “That was the byproduct of a lot of sign language from your mom when we realized you were there. We could hear you seething.”

“And grinding yer teeth, darlin’.” Felicia laughed. “Sorry, hun, but you’re ‘bout as subtle as a bull in a china shop. Besides, y’all can’t hide from your momma.”

“Not that I’d wanna, as a rule, but…aw, shit.” Cain sighed, bending to kiss his wife. “Yer a brat.”

“And you’re an ass that knocked me up twice with no time to rest between pregnancies, so shut up and fix the sink, then have some coffee.”

Rolling his eyes, Cain stole one last kiss and moved to do as he was told.
