His blonde colleague nodded soberly. "Yes."
Cain scowled hard, reaching for the necessary implement as he evaluated the situation. "It's a tricky place to make the first incision...should we get a consult?"
"Maybe." his colleague agreed, turning dark eyes to their supervisor. "Mamma?"
Claire laughed a little as she gave the cake her most serious look. "Mmmm...I'd cut closer to the flower. Birthday boy should get a flower."
"I 'gree." Six year old Benjamin Callahan confirmed with an emphatic nod, his too-long blonde locks flouncing with the movement. "You needs a frosty flower."
Smirking, Cain nodded in agreement and proceeded to cut the first slice of the chocolate cake mother and son had collaborated on, bearing a white frosting scrawl reading "Happy Birthday Cain" and adorned with three large white frosting blossoms.
"Okay, so this way we all get one frosting flower." he confirmed. "Good work, Dr. Callahan."
Ben giggled, patting his father's arm. "Good work, Doc'er Callahan. Mamma, you get next one!"
"You don't want the next one, baby?"
"Lady first. Right, Daddy?"
Cain grinned, sharing a warm look with Claire over the top of their son's head, not for the first time floored by the tenderness in her expression...and the marvel of the little boy seated between them.
"Damn straight, bub." he agreed softly, returning to the delicate culinary surgery that lay before him.
