[mad muses] march - ambrose bierce quote

Feb 27, 2009 13:38

Sassy is no_substitution, and is used without knowledge but a great deal of love and hope she will beat up on Cain some. :P

ONCE, adv. Enough.

All it took was once. One moment, one choice…one second in the right place at the wrong time to take what should have been his best days and turn them to shit. He probably should have seen it coming, too, but that would have been smart. Prudent.

He was no genius, but even a genius could be a fucking idiot.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

“Sass, STOP!!”

She was stronger than him, but he had momentum on his side as he hauled her forward and turned, shielding her with his body as the demon lunged. He didn’t think, didn’t stop, only acted on the most primal of instincts: protect his own. No matter that she was capable of handling things he couldn’t, healing faster than he could dream…

He loved her, she was his, and she was in harm’s way.

The circular jaws that clamped down on his calf and sank into flesh were a small price to pay. The pain that overloaded his nerves and his brain, short-circuiting his body into unconsciousness…they were temporary.

Sassy wasn’t hurt. That was all that mattered.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*

Now in the harsh light of day, he knew a hell of a lot more mattered than a little pain. In the light of day, he had Ethan’s library and a day off work to put up the leg that was still bothering him and stare at the page that bore an etching of the same demon that Sassy had lost in combat the night before.

The Calepso was a highly aggressive demon hunted nearly to extinction in the 4th Century. Slaughtered not by man but by its natural enemy, the Slyryn, it both kills and breeds by biting its victims and injecting a parasite that travels to the heart and brain, consuming both in its wake within approximately twelve days of infection. Once the victim is dead, eggs laid in the undigested tissues of the brain…

One bite, one shot. That was all it took.

And as Cain glanced away from the volume in front of him and down at the angry red mass on the back of his leg, which was now located three inches above the bite. It was elliptical, and since last night it had sprouted legs…one slender protrusion on each side, swelling just beneath the surface of his skin.

Pain didn’t matter. Dying didn’t matter. Only his promise to Sassy mattered…the one that had nothing to do with marrying her or making her happy.

He promised her he’d never die…and he only had eleven days left to figure out how the hell he was going to keep it.
