OMG I cannot beleive I forgot about this until now...
So the hotel we were staying at was by this large suburban shopping area, there was the big mall across the street and all these large anchor store strip malls around. The first busines as you go onto the street to the hotel is a Best Buy. I kid you not, come Tuesday morning before Thanksgiving, there were people lined up outside of the store with tents and supplies to camp out. It was THE MOST DISGUSTING THING!!!!!!!!!
And the line kept growing over the next 2 days until it went behind the building. There were several tents...and people were there Thursday holding spots. How disgusting is it that a consumerist greed is overtaking something that should be about spending time with family.
Easter is the only holiday that hasn't gone over the edge of consumerist association. There's the candy thing of course, but there is no large shopping event associated with it or a lot of commercial things to buy, I think a lot of people don't really celebrate it outside of the Easter Bunny kid deal. But I wouldn't be surprised if it goes the way of the other main holidays in the next decade, like Halloween finally slipped into the capitalist pit within the past 10 years.
Is stuff like this that makes me take away a good bit of tolerance for this society.
Also something else I forgot to mention is that I tried 2 "new" non-north foods...though there is a possibility that I have had them before but I don't remember. I tried alligator meat and these chips made from fried plantains, called "Islenos" or something. Both were very bland, so it is possible that I forgot trying them before.
