Criminal Minds

I am totally torn up about Criminal Minds. When I hear that they'd be firing one of their three regular actresses and reducing the hours of a second, while keeping all of the guys, natch, I was all set not to watch this new season, because I have too many shows on my list already (and people are making me watch H-50, thanks for that guys!) and it seemed like a good solution. But then somebody commented about JJ's last episode and that made me watch it and: IT IS THE META TO END ALL METAS! Repeated emphasizing of how great JJ is and how great she is at her job and that she does not regret being a working mom AT ALL. She's being forcibly removed from the team, though that team tried to fight to keep her. Her reason for leaving is forced promotion. The guys "up there" want her at the Pentagon. It is all about how awesome she is and about THOSE PEOPLE don't respect her wishes and the whole episode is an incredible love letter to the character as well as meta about her being forced to leave.

Then the next week they spend showcasing and appreciating their remaining two female characters. Especially Garcia who was already awesome and an awesome character for being unsusual for a female character.

So, I still hate the reduced female presence (especially, as they really could much better have dropped Rossi from the show. I don't hate the character, but I don't really find him necessary either), but from a storytelling standpoint they've certainly done the best things possible with it.

This is not to say that the writers never screw up, but they do get things right also. (The Hotch = Mom analogy comes to mind.)
