It was like clockwork.
The end of October always brought the same chill in the air, the same dying leaves on the ground, and the same feeling of dread that draped over them like a wet blanket.
First, the all the lights would turn low and the house would grow quiet. Then the whispers started.
"...all alone, with nothing but her shadow to keep her company in that big, drafty house."
"...rattling chains, ghostly cries, the smell of copper..."
"'Turn around,' someone said."
And then, a loud scream.
"Sigurd!" Deirdre buried her head in her hands with a cry of frustration. "I thought you were going to do something about this!" Sigurd groaned, setting his book down on the table and standing up. Every year, the kids insisted on having a Big Halloween Sleepover and every year Cyas would terrorize Celice, Yuria and Yurius with the creepiest stories he could find. Usually Alvis and Aida would be the ones to put a stop to it, but this year they'd gone away for a romantic weekend.
"You're right, sweetheart, and a promise is a promise," Sigurd said. "I'll be right back." He followed the sounds of shouts and screaming and laughter down the hall to Celice's room and opened the door. Yuria and Celice were crying and clinging to Yurius, who was glaring daggers at his big brother. Cyas, who had been laughing his head off, immediately stopped when he realized an adult was in the doorway.
"Oh, hi, Uncle Sigurd!"
"Really, Cyas! Must you continue to scare the younger children like this every year?"
"It's not my fault!" Cyas protested. "They keep telling me, we're not little kids anymore, we can handle the scary stuff! Then they cry like babies...except Yurius, he just whines about how he's gonna get me for this."
"When they say scary stuff, I doubt they mean grisly tales of paranoia fuel," Sigurd scolded. "There's a balance between kiddy fare and what the internet so lovingly calls Creepypasta. I suggest you learn it."
"Yeah, Cyas," Yurius added, sticking his tongue out at his brother. Cyas sighed.
"I can't promise I'll try," he said, "but I'll try to try."
"Well, do better than that," Celice demanded. Yuria nodded, giving her oldest brother a dirty look. Sigurd chuckled and rolled his eyes.
"If I hear any more screaming for the rest of the evening, it better be coming from the television," he warned playfully, and headed back to the den. Deirdre smiled wryly at him.
"Next year, Alvis is taking the kids on Halloween while you and I go away for a romantic weekend," she said. Sigurd grinned, joining her on the couch.
"I love the way you think," he murmured, drawing her close for a kiss.
