Had a brainstorm today that there's a biochemical relationship between alcohol abuse (substance abuse) and selfishness. As your body is working to rid itself of the toxins, it is literally so "self-concerned" that it loses its ability to be generous and giving to others. Whereas when you don't have your body working so hard to purify itself (regardless of whether or not you have a generous spirit) it is more likely that you might turn your thoughts outward to others. This, in turn, makes it easy to be generous to them.
