I have a talent / blessing / curse for finding myself in or near disasters and coming through it generally unscathed. I always thank my lucky stars, and what ever else, for that.
When I arrived in New York City, there was talk of a storm. As the days went on the forecast grew to a hurricane. Next thing I know I’m in the middle of the Storm of the Century. Fortunately all the ForteFemme students, TA, partners, and myself, we were fine. We cut the class short by half an hour and made it out before the subways closed.
If you or your loved ones were impacted by this super storm, my heart goes out to you. I hope you get the assistance needed ASAP. New Yorkers and New Jersey folks are an amazing lot. I did experience a post-Sandy moment of beauty & bliss I’d like to share…
Two days after the disastrous storm I assisted my friends D & M deliver food, water and flashlights to M’s parents. They had no power, dwindling food and even less water. We trudged up 18 floors in a pitch-dark stairwell, lit only by our flashlights, lugging backpacks full of the goods. We delivered the supplies, hugged, talked and started to leave... When we heard loud knocking on the doors of the apartments on the floor.
We opened the door and were met by the smiling face of a handsome young man with a white clerical collar. Then two women in their 20's, wholesome with disarming smiles. These three friends, the Episcopalian priest from St. Bart’s and the women, made sandwiches themselves. They were going from floor to floor, apartment to apartment, checking to see who was around and needed food, water or assistance. They brought up the FEMA food items left in the lobby of the high-rise. Without the elevators working, many of the residents were not able to get down to get these items themselves.
One of the women wrote down notes on who got food, who needed looking into the next day. They said that if the outage were to continue they would send in another group of friends the next day and follow up with each resident.
We asked them whom they were working for, figuring perhaps this was an organizational effort. They said "no. It's just us. We're just friends - we got together and decided to do this."
On the long dark walk down 18 floors I couldn't stop crying.
Beauty. True meaning of grace.
