1. Big Step Forward with My Art This Fall - Come to My Exhibitions!

It’s a little bit scary and a whole lot exciting for me.

I feel like I’m taking a big huge leap forward with my art and showing of my art. This fall brings events that have my heart racing with excitement.

I hope you’ll be there at these events to share my art, passion and excitement!

Now for a bit of a candid confession….

I’ve been steadily creating art for many, many years now. But I’ve often felt frustrated with my work being ghettoized and dismissed, or forced into categories I did not consent to. Still I create. Maybe I’m a fool. True, my venues, my ‘studio’, my laboratories have been non-conventional and out of the refined art milieu. But doesn’t art and expression belong everywhere? The reality is that art is dismissed or discounted if it’s not curated into digestible and socially acceptable context - this is especially true for works that make people uncomfortable. My work isn’t made to match the sofa. (Although I’ve made sofa art that’s meant to match the art. http://youtu.be/iZWZAN8AYBM )


Still I create. Sometimes this very frustration drives me forward to continue with this madness called art.

I have notebooks full of sketches, scripts and ideas. A bit at a time, they are coming to life. Will I have enough time and resource to birth all of them and the others that I keep conceiving? It’s my hope to have you to witness the births and growth of my creations. Some of these creations want to play with you. Sometimes they have strange ideas of entails play, but you just might enjoy them.

This fall I have three big art steps I’m taking.
  1. September 15th in San Francisco, my Yamamba character will set foot in the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and perform a new piece. Will I defile this hallowed hall of contemporary art?   1. September 29th in Tokyo, my Yamamba appears again, to create beauty and mark time and memory using bodies and flowers at Sadistic Circus… Which will then create source material for….
  1. My first participation in San Francisco Open Studios on October 18 - 21st.  There, for the first time, the scrolls created form moments of madness and beauty will be publicly displayed. I’m also planning to create body prints on the spot for a special event on the 18th. http://www.artspan.org/artist/midori
