Land: Wailing Woods
Character : Doyle and an unnamed couple from Castus
Size: 5100 words
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Summary/Preview:
Welcome: Sublime.
"Welcome! I know we've never met before. I know this because I'm really good with faces. Even if for some reason I did forget your faces there's no way I would forget your style. You just don't see people showing off that much skin around here.
Well, I do at work but that's different people expect the guys to look more exotic.
It does make me wonder what you're doing here? We don't get many visitors.I'm not sure why there are many wondrous things to see in our town.I can't imagine many places have what we do. We have many great things to see. The market has some of the freshest foods and the food stalls are nice for a quick snack.
We do have proper restaurants if you are looking to take a break and sit for a while. Our cooks are the best you will ever find. There are the usual shops if you're looking to buy things. We also have the most beautiful temples in all of Madrona.
If you're interested I can show you around before I start my shift at The Dragon tonight?" Doyle was excited to meet new people and share his love of the wailing woods with them.
Forbidden Forest: Exodus.
"We're now standing on the edge of the Forbidden Forest. Most people that wander close to the edge leave a small offering to Melehan. I'm sure he will understand that you are not from around here so you were unaware of the custom. I would suggest you at least bow towards the giant tree in the distance. Unless you want to annoy a God." Doyle winked and waited for the couple to bow towards the tree in the distance.
"What does the forest separate us from? I'm sorry I thought you knew our story if you came to visit.
Long before my grandparents' grandparents were born Dormant Dragon and the Wailing Woods was one thriving town. They used to be called Dragon Woods. For a long time, everyone lived happily with one another. As happy as any town could be.
Over time people began to question what they were taught. Not everyone believed in the teaching of the Holy Church of Saint Arthur. How could anyone think that the King would be the one to fix the world?
You have heard the story about the town that almost had a civil war over the long dead King? I won't bore you with the details. The people that thought Morgana's line would be a better fit for the throne were given until sundown to leave town or be executed at sunrise. You can imagine that everyone that was a true believer packed up and moved here. They walked for five days before stopping here. They named this land the Wailing Woods.
We have many things to see so let's keep moving." Doyle explained.
Home: Covenant
"Why five days? No, there's nothing symbolic about the number five. It was at the edge of the woods that Anglingwain announced that this was the spot we were meant to be. Everyone knew better than to argue with her when it came to matters of the Great ladies and their wishes. That very night they made camp and started to plan how the town would look once they built it.
I would like to think we stayed true to Anglingwain's vision. It would be a shame of we've been disappointing the Great Ladies every day we've lived here.
The Great War: Crusade.
"There are a few people that would agree with you. They still speak of how it was the worst strategy to relocate our people so close to the Dragons. I think the fact that our two towns are so close together made the war as brief as it was. No one wanted their town destroyed by the other side. The peace deal may have been harder to negotiate if the other town was farther away. That's just my opinion." Doyle smiled as they continued walking down the main street. He knew the towns history almost as well as the historians.
Birth Rite: Mecca
"The main problem was that not only were they kicking our ancestors out of the town, but they were denying us the right to our birth rite.
What gives them the right to say that our bloodlines are less than theirs? Who's to say that their way is the best way? We were exiled and kept from the land that the lore says our most holy was born. Is that right? Wouldn't you be upset if you'd been banned from where Castus had been born? Wouldn't you fight to still be able to visit the same hallowed grounds?" Doyle wanted them to know what the war had been about.
The Imperium Church: Genesis
"This was the first thing that was erected when the town was settled. The people slept in tents or under the stars so they could pool their resources and build this. It still stands to remind us why we left the old life and settled here.
There are a small living quarters in the back where Lady Belase runs the city as well as the church. There is plenty of gossip about who will take over when she walks with the Great Ladies. I keep reminding everyone that she is only seventy and will no doubt outlive us all." Doyle laughed.
The church: Writer's Choice. Alter
"You have to see the alter. I know every church has one and everyone thinks theirs is the most beautiful. Ours really is special. As you can see it has the mark of each of the Great Ladies carved on the base. Lady Belase's own mark is special on the top. I doubt anyone else has as pretty of a mark. It takes the stone cutter days to carve the symbol on the top and then it is still longer for it to be filled with melted gold and gemstones. When we pass trough the doors on the left to continue our tour you can see the sacred symbols of the past Ladies that now walk with The Great Ladies.
Ladies at Peace: Lamentation
"You don't honor the Great Ladies? Then you may find this interesting. Our common folk is buried across town, but here is where the descendants of the Great Ladies themselves are resting. I know they are pleased with this spot they are close enough to the church to feel the love and community spirit. They are also close to the Great Forest. I can't think of a better place for our Great Ladies to lay their weary bones and find peace. We all take turns keeping the grounds beautiful and the headstone polished. It is a great honor to be chosen for the job."
Ladies at Peace grounds keepers: Repent.
"Most of the people that volunteer for the privilege come from fine families. There are a few that do the more dirty jobs that need to be done. Those jobs are always reserved for the people that are in desperate need of salvation. They always hope that by doing good deeds for Great Ladies they will be blessed and their sins will be forgiven. I try not to let myself get caught in any situation that would make the Great Ladies disappointed in me. That is the best advice I can give anyone. That and always tip your service staff." Doyle tipped his hat and walked back towards the road.
Hall of Justice: Judgment.
"That is a thought provoking question. Is there anything that you can't be forgiven for? Well, I'm not one of the Great Ladies. I am not a lady at all. The current judge is Eineve. She alone can decide if someone is worthy of a second chance. Those that are found guilty always receive a creative punishment that fits their crime. Eineve maybe a small old woman but I wouldn't want to stand before her for judgment. Her green eyes are just as sharp now as they were when she was a woman half her age. As well as half her size." the last part was whispered with a grin.
Divine Help: Supplication
"The statute is as old as our town. The Great Lady Morgana watches over us and protects all she sees.
The small leather bench at her feet? Oh no, you're right it is at an odd height for a sitting bench. It's a kneeling bench. If you really need to implore her wisdom, you kneel and pray for her intervention.
It's not something that is done lightly. I don't know if there's anything I would be willing to kneel day and night without food or sleep. I do like the fact that she is always there and willing to listen and help if I do need her.
Gahebon Prophet.
"That trail in the distance is one to avoid. On second though you should think about stopping out there. I will warn you that Gahebon is a bit crazy. He's never been violent no matter what the gossip says. The only time I have ever known him to lift a hand to anyone was when Llyce tried to burn his house down. I still say Llyce was asking for trouble. He has no reason to be in that part of the forest.
Gahebon's lived out on his own ever since he denounced the Great Lady's birthright. He went on about how we will never be whole until we mend our fences with the Dragons. He wanders around the woods day and night spouting his 'prophecies'.
I bet he has some interesting things to trade with. You no doubt have things he can't grow or make on his own. Be sure and announce yourselves when you get close to his cabin." Doyle hustled them on to their next destination.
Pilgrimage.
"I have to ask who made your wagon. I've heard that the few we have will need to be replaced soon. We travel twice a year to the Blessed Isle to bring supplies to the women that live there. They do grow a fine variety of tea and a small sampling of herbs. The island is too small to grow enough to sell for profit. There's always things that needed to be carted out to them. It is isolated and not a lot of options for shopping. The closest neighbors would be Angel Pass. They have a handful of uppity pain in the asses at the most. I doubt they would eat or drink anything we grew. The town's islands get along about as well as Dormant Dragon does with us." Doyle waved his hand towards the neighboring town.
Blessed Isle: Veiled Mysteries.
"You've never been that far out? To tell you the truth I've never been out there. No one goes near the islands without permission from the Great lady herself. She isn't one to allow outsiders out there. Only the most devote live there. They few women and girls out there are all studying to serve the Great ladies. It isn't a life I would want. It's a hard life. All they do is eat and pray and make plans for when the end is near. Not the literal end mind you. That would be crazy. It means the end of the wait for Mordred and his Blessed Mother to return to us." Doyle explained as he rushed them along to the next stop on their walking tour.
Blessed Isle Vows: Nirvana.
"I can understand why you would be curious about their life out there. The girls that are chosen to live out there always treat it like the most wonderful thing that could happen to a person.
The vows they take I could never live with. Poverty is one thing but they also don't speak. Some people say they can speak if it's urgent.
The only one that I've heard of that changed their minds and came home was Astondrie. She never left the house and no one was able to visit her. That was long before my time so it may be a lie.
If they do find a happiness that far surpasses what we have here then I am happy for them." Doyle hurried them along the curve in the road.
Why We Wait: Resurrection.
"Why do they do it? I take it your people are not a big fan of going without to show your devotion? I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound insensitive it's just different from here. What happens when your one true being returns? Do you believe he will return one day to set things right? Castus, when he finally comes back how will he know how strong your love for him is?" Doyle had never heard of such a thing. To only have one God was odd enough but to not have strict days of observation that showed your strength and will be something he couldn't understand.
"He will demand fifty percent of everything you own that has value? That seems a little steep and odd. No offense to you or your ways. I can't imagine any divine being would prefer things over, followers. What would be the point of coming back if there as no one to worship you?" Doyle tried his best not to laugh at the thought.
Friendship : Blessing
"I had a crazy idea, you could give a small tribute and have a few special pieces blessed before you leave. That might be worth more to Castus.
No disrespect intended I was just thinking that if no one else comes out this way you would have something very special and unique. That would have to be worth more in the afterlife. I would think that Castus would put a higher value on things that were a bit more difficult to come by. Who knows if they form a solid friendship it could be good for our people." Doyle liked the thought of making new friends.
Kadyce's Bakery: Communion
"You're in luck I think Kivres is on baking duty this afternoon. He makes the best bread in the whole town. He only bakes it for the church and special occasions. He has been known to bake for a special occasion if it was something he liked. I'm not joking if he doesn't care about the people or the reason for the celebration then there is no amount of coin that can make him change his mind.
Everyone says he's always been that way. He was born on the feast of the Mother's Milk and some say it ingrained in him the need to feed the world.
Personally, I think he's a judgmental ass that doesn't think everyone should be able to taste his food.
Lucky for us his assistant loves me and will gladly sell us a few loaves of bread," Doyle ushered them up to the small bakery and waited while he chatted with a girl in the doorway.
Celebrations and Gifts: Yetzer Ra.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean any disrespect to you or Castus.
It seems like an odd thing to ask of you. Where does he keep it? How can he use it? We leave offerings as well, but they are things that will go back to the ground. That's not exactly true, we do give things of value but not to the Great Ladies in the sky. We all do our part to make sure the current Lady has everything she needs. There are those that will also make sure she has things she wants as well. Everyone used to try to one up each other with their extravagant gifts for her. It can become very competitive and fun to watch." he winked.
"I can remember one year on the day of her birth Ywairamur thought he had the best gift. He sewed the most beautiful gems into a gown for her. It must've taken him at least that year to make it. I know for a fact he made the gown as well. He is the best dressmaker in our town.
The same year Pellindelis and Blaindelis worked together on their gifts. They paired jewelry with sweets. Each one complimented the other. It was the most amazing thing anyone had ever seen. It tasted even better then it looked.
It was long before Ywairamur, Pellindelis, and Blaindelis all argued that their gift was the one that showed the most love.
That was when our Current Lady decided that she and the Ladies that came after her would no longer accept gifts that had gems or coins on them. I don't know how was more upset about what had happened.
It would've been one of the biggest bragging rights to having given the best gift. Their shop would've easily quadrupled in profits.
Give it to the people: Alms
"What happened after she figured out what their motives were? It was the most dramatic thing that I can recall ever happening at gathering. Our Lady gave a speech about giving out of love and respect and not to gain social status. That a gift given with an impure heart to someone as import as herself would leave a mark on you that would follow you into the beyond. Well, not exactly but I doubt I could recreate her fiery speech or that you want to spend the better part of the afternoon hearing it. As she spoke she we all could see flashes of one of her ceremonial knives punctuate the air, it turns out she had been slicing the gems off her dress. She reminded everyone that anyone who knew what Ywairamur, Pellindelis, and Blaindelis had been planning was just as guilty as they were. She bundled up every gem, coin, and sweet, and tossed them to where the children gather. She said that they were the only ones that could not be held responsible for anyone's actions. The next year she only allowed the children to attend her anniversary of her birth. They all brought simple gifts." Doyle knew this to be a fact he was still able to attend as a child when it had happened.
Why I am different :: Writer's Choice: Confession
"My name? I was named after my great granddad. I never met the man but I'm told I look a bit like him. Sadly, I think I will be as short as he was as well. Why do you ask?" Doyle was confused. They had seen so many wondrous things so far and they were curious about his name?
"Oh, you're right mine is simpler to say. I'm sorry, I forgot you don't know my life story. Everyone here knows that I wasn't born in Wailing Woods.
I come from a place far from here. I don't really remember it. I was still a baby when they chose to run. My parents were going to stand trial and they knew they would be found guilty. They bribed a guard to help them escape. They stole a supply wagon and stopped just long enough to fetch me before they ran." Doyle's eyes wandered off to the direction of the road they once traveled as a family.
"You're right it's kind of like you're own history. Except that your Castus saved people and my parents robbed and eventually started to kill people. They crossed the line from public nuisances to criminals when they killed one of the better off families only heir.
Being on the road didn't make them change their ways. If anything they were even bolder with their behavior. I'm sure they haven't changed unless of course there dead." Doyle explained.
Mother: Angel
"How come it took so long for the law to catch up to them? My parents are both very attractive and came from good families. I think if they had been anything else then they would've been stopped long before it got that bad. I doubt anyone saw past their pretty faces and nice manners. I bet it was even easier to fool people once my mother was pregnant. How many people would think a beautiful woman would be the mastermind behind the blackmail con they were pulling. Mother would con them into her bed and they would either blackmail them not to tell the man's wife or my father. It depended on the circumstances.
It amazes me how many people fell for it. When they tried it here it fell apart almost as bad as it did at home." Doyle was glad things had happened they way they had. He loved his life in the Wailing Woods.
Choices: Redemption
"I'm not sure if Our lady did give my parents a choice to stay and work off the trouble they had caused if they would've stayed. They didn't fear anything except the hangman's noose or the ax.
I have little doubt if they thought they could get something out it my parents would have thrown themselves on the mercy of the Great Ladies and asked for another chance to prove they could change.
I'm grateful that Our Lady knew that they would never willing change for the better. I hope one day they realize everything they lost by living the way they do.
Just Deserts: Karma
"If I could have one wish about my parents future? I should be the better person and hope they find what makes them happy. I doubt those two will ever be happy. They've cheated more people out of their valuables then you would believe. Their wagon must be loaded down with gems and coins by now. It's they could fill a dozen wagons a dozen times over and it still wouldn't be enough. I don't think they know how badly their actions hurt people. They always treated it like a game. My wish would be that they run into people exactly like them. think it would be god for them to see their cons from the other side. I doubt they will change but it may make them think twice about how they steal from." Doyle hoped then when they finally wound up in the great beyond they would be held accountable.
School Days: Catechism
"I think the hardest thing for me to adjust to after they left was school. I'd never been to a classroom before. Mother always said that schools were temporary jails for stupid children. My parents had taught me everything they thought I should know.
Brenddydd and Igede thought I needed to learn more than they had taught me. I will always be thankful that they did. I learned all the basic things you need to survive in a regular life.
It was because of Igede that I learned about The Great Ladies. I bet if you stopped by the little building near the gates when you leave I bet she'll give you a few scrolls if you're interested." Doyle knew that Igede would enjoy meeting them.
Bordello de Dragon: Hallelujah
"I stayed in school for a few years after that I was offered a job at the Bordello de Dragon. It was mostly errands and small jobs around the place. It was the greatest thing that had ever happened to me.
I was lucky Mahelchmai liked my attitude and gave me a promotion so I could help him in the kitchen. well, he'll tell you he runs the kitchen but honestly there's nothing that goes on in that place that he doesn't know about. One day I hope to have his job. I hope it will be years from now. I want him to live a long and happy life and leave the job to me when he thinks I'm ready. If you were here for more than an afternoon I would say you should stop by. You won't find better-looking men anywhere around." Doyle was proud of his job and the people he worked with.
You Learn Something New Everyday: Revelation
"I wasn't forced to work there. I had other choices but I didn't want to work with the scholars. If I was going to do that I would've just stayed in school. The thought of working with the blacksmith was not appealing either. The thought of being not only stuck indoors but with a burning forge all day was not for me.
I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my life, but I know I wanted to make people happy. I don't think I could take care of the guests in the rooms. I do enjoy being able to help run the house.
I never had the opportunity to work in a kitchen or a garden. My parents never stayed in a town long enough to plant anything. We always ate our meals in the pub or the Inn wherever we stayed.
Really, your family can manage to make things grown on the wagons? That has to be one of the best things I've heard in a while. I wish you were staying long enough to teach me what you know." Doyle hoped that one day he would learn how they made it happen.
New Friends: Temptation
Doyle was tempted to go with them and see what would happen if they were to ask for a blessing ceremony. He had little doubt that their request would be granted. He wished he could talk them into staying for the week. He thought they might change their minds about staying if they stopped by the dragon. He knew the bordello had the best staff and the tastiest food. He wasn't one for a drink he knew that people thought their wine was every bit as good as the expensive bottles from the capital. He really wished they could stay.
Happy Thoughts: Demon.
"That is sad that most people believe the worst about your family. I haven't heard any tales of your kin that I can recall. No one should be judged so harshly from gossip. My boss always says hateful people have the smallest minds. Mahelchmai says that the hate is like a little demon that invades your head and once it takes root in there it'll push all the goodness out. You'll wind up mean bitter, and alone if you let that happen. Did I mention my boss is awesome but he drinks a bit more than he should?" Doyle laughed.
Orcanddydd: Sanctification
"Why does such a plain house have such an elaborate gate?
Orcanddydd uses that space to make everything Our Lady needs for each ceremony throughout the year. She doesn't let anyone even see what she's working on let alone allow them to touch things.
She may be tiny but she has a strong arm and is not afraid to smack anyone that gets too close. The town got together and put the gate up to keep people away. It was easier than trying to get her to change. It is pretty and it does add a bit of charm to the street I think.
Leaves of Future Transcendence
"On the right is Margaflor's tea shop. We can stop in for a cup if you'd like. She always has the best selection. She grows her own blends our back. On the edge of the yard between her shop and the woods she has her own bee colony. It's the best honey you can find.
One word of caution I would stay away from anything labeled Goddess Special. Unless you want to spend the day with your head in the clouds speaking with the moon and the stars. If you have any need for that then you should stop by and buy a small sack to take with you." Doyle laughed at the thought.
Argarvudd: Meditation.
"Really you get requests for items that are good for clarity? I'm sure Margaflor would be helpful. Not with tea, but she would send you to Argarvudd. They have been joined for more years than I've been alive. Margaflor may know what teas you could stock for things other than their taste.
Argarvudd could spend a week teaching you about the differences between the different candles and crystals one needs for their spiritual journey.
I've been going to see her for years and I only know a small portion of what I think I should. I love to learn whatever they both will teach me." Doyle loved the women like they were his parents.
A Woman Scorn Penitent
"The charred remains of the building at the end of the lane to our left? That is a sad tale.
Gwywg had been courting Gwenhwyramur ever since they were old enough to start thinking about a future. As it turns out Danbraviana had her eye on Gwywg as well. Gwenhwyramur was livid when people started to say that Gwywg was going to leave her for Danbraviana. Gwenhwyramur wasn't going to let that happen. She marched over Danbraviana's house the two got into an argument that quickly escalated and they somehow managed to knock over an oil lamp. The house burned to the ground before anyone could save it. Sadly, neither woman made it out. The Elders have left it as it stood to remind everyone what could happen if you act without thinking.
Good Bye: Benediction
It was nice to meet you both. I hope you enjoyed your tour of our little town.
Maybe one day there will be an established trade route between our people.
That would be exciting. Think of all the new plants I could grow in my garden. I would love to be able to cook with a better variety of spices. I'll gladly use the ones I trade for today and maybe if you're near here again you could bring more of a selection? Maybe next time you'll have time to stop and have a cup of tea and snack." Doyle hugged them both and watched they made their way back to their wagon. He really did hope they would be back to visit.
Alone Once More Silence
Doyle walked back towards The Dragon grateful had a late shift. He would've figured out a way to show his new friends around even if he hadn't been. He hoped they would be as good as their word and come back. The thought of trading not only goods but stories with them as well were exciting. He loved to hear about customs and people from faraway lands. Until this afternoon, he had to make do with storybooks.
He couldn't recall anyone besides his parents passing through town before today. Maybe today was a sign that things were about to change.
