I just don’t like football

One of the guys where I work was coming around with a betting thing for the
Super Bowl this coming Sunday.
“You bet on everything to do with it,” he explained to me, holding up a
sheet of paper full of check off boxes. “Who wins the coin toss, who
scores the most points, who wins the game, what songs are sung at half
time, which player is MVP and the total points!”
“Sorry, no thanks,” I told him.
“It’s easy, you just put down which player you think will win MVP!”
“I don’t even know which teams are playing. Although I take it from the
local news that our local team is not.”
“You can still bet on the game!” he said. “All you have to do it watch the
game and write down the answers to see if you’ve won!”
“I watched a football game in 1975,” I told him. “I didn’t like it, so
haven’t bothered to do it again.”
He went away shaking his head.

It’s true, I’ve never been a big fan of professional sports. The only one
I come close to following is baseball. Even then I don’t normally watch
the games. It’s more out of a weird family loyalty thing. My
grandfather was playing professional baseball a bit over a century ago, so
I sometimes watch game clips in case I see him out there playing. Unlikely
since he died in 1935.

An awful lot of folks seem to like professional sports. There are times I
feel I’m missing something by not liking them. But, that doesn’t make me
like them.
