Tea with the demon squirrel

Oct 01, 2009 13:46

Yesterday at Holy Cross, the guy from the Three cups of tea came to speak. As lots of tickets were sold and it was going to run late, my wife asked if I could come help out with the AV stuff.

I got there early and brought my wife dinner from the noodle place we like. The, we headed over to the chapel where the talk was being given.
Headed over there, we saw a large squirrel cross the path ahead of us and run up a tree. It was clearly a demon squirrel.

I tried to shoe it away, but it only looked at me and chattered back at me. Not only was it not scared of me, but even the hawks seemed to keep away from it.

But, ignoring the demon squirrel, we got to the chapel where we found the “Jesuit Heritage” involved bucket loaders.

It is a nice enough space.

The windows are very nice as well.

There was a whole mess of projectors, players, laptops, cameras and such to be dealt with. I understand why my wife wanted more help.

I was tempted to go hide, but the closest place was taken by Zorro.

So, I left my wife and the other AV person to do the electronics.

I clamped lights on poles. That I can do without trouble.

yebo targeted them on me at the lectern once they were hung.

It was quite bright. When the speaker joked about not being able to see the crowd, I knew it wasn’t a joke.

I agree to help out during the talk as long as whatever it the job, it was simple. yebo found one that only took pushing 2 buttons, one at a time.

I could touch the “shutter” and “input” button on the projector.

But, not touch the sound board.

There were a lot of people who showed up for the talk.

The talk was interesting enough. The goals of the organization are certainly good.
As my wife said, he is something of a “free spirit” for time allotment. He talk was about double the scheduled amount, had not started on time, then he offered to sign everyone’s book. That’s nice and all, but it did lead to a long night.
The good news was we were able to get everything all taken apart and loaded while people were in line getting their books signed.

This morning my interview went well. The company is small (10 people) but is strong for a small place. The owner/manager/chief engineer was pretty certain I’d get at least some temp work out of it as he really needs some help right away.
There is another candidate for the full time position that they’re trying to hire from one of their competitors. But, they’ve got parts that need to ship in October that still have to be designed. And, 2 weeks notice for the other guy, even if they decide to go with him, would make that very hard. So, there is a very good chance I’ll be working for them for the short term.
We’ll see.
