Godkids visit, day 4

Aug 15, 2018 08:59

Driving into Boston we stopped at the Swiss Bakery we like for breakfast.

Then, off to downtown where we parked near the aquarium.

We’ve taken several boat rides from this pier with the kids over the years. Whale watches, Codzilla, rides to the harbor islands and now the commuter shuttle to Charlestown. Exciting!
But, we missed the boat. Sad…

The good news is the commuters shuttle runs every 1/2 hour all day long, so we could just wait for the next one.

While waiting, we saw some boats I’m not sure meet clean air requirements.

Not that the Boston harbor is that great anyhow.

Although it is MUCH better than when I was a kid. We did still ponder this watermelon and what brought it to be partially cut up in the harbor…

We did go over to the Aquarium and watch the seals in the tank out front.

As we waited, the clouds started depending and fog rolled in.

Codzilla left just before our boat did.

Codzilla got to the fog bank and turned around and went back. I guess doing high speed circles to get the passengers wet isn’t safe in the fog. I think they’re right about that. It’s an expensive ride. I wonder if folks got their money back…

This one should be titled "The city before her, but there are Pokemon to catch".

It is only a 10 minute boat ride.

And, that fog was weird. I told them that maybe we were in the Twilight Zone and we’d come back to a different Boston.

Everyone was super impressed.

I’m being unfair. The boat ride was short, but it was enjoyed.

It didn’t hurt that the museum we went to had a giant video game.

You build your boat, then try and sail it against others.

It was pretty fun.

Ben seemed taken with the auger. It said the ship took 5,000,000 holes to build. 2 years ago they put a counter on this auger and it’s only had 400,000 turns. So, it’s going to take a long time to finish the ship. Ben certainly did his share.

Then, they built their own boats.

I was happy there were benches.

The mystery of the upstairs goat remains.

We checked our heights for the ship. This would be important later.

Dressing people seems to be consistently popular.

This time, relative prices were discussed.

But, how can that compete with cannon?

There was also the letting loose and furling the sail experiments.

But, then through the Navy yard to the ship.

The USS Constitution is the oldest commissioned war ship still on the water.

And, a fairly steep climb at high tide…

Yes, there were still Pokemon.

The ceiling issue we measured for earlier came into play.

My wife waited above. No, not up in the rigging.

It was hot and crapped below. I was glad to go above again.

As it is still technically a commissioned ship, they keep it in working condition.

There was a discussion of climbing the hill to see the Bunker Hill Monument, or going back to Boston and having lunch. Even if back through the fog.
It was 3 to 1 for lunch.

As we waited for the boat, I watch a tall building live up to the "skyscraper" name and have a fight with a cloud. Sadly, it lost.

The fog in the outer harbor was quite bad.

But, it doesn’t stop the commuter boats!

Or, the Pokemon.

Then over to the food court at Faneuil Hall.

It’s so very different from when I was a kid. When I was a kid there was a farmer’s market there. Now it is a shopping mall food court. But, it does have all sorts of different foods so everyone can get what they want. Except my wife who only got horrible service.

We did listen to some good violin playing. There is always some sort of performance going on there.

While most of us ate, and my wife seethed, the clouds broke up.

This led us to think we’d be OK going off to the car and out to the miniature golf place.

And, when we got there, it wasn’t raining.

There are some tricky places and more than one ball went into the water.

Some of us had problems with trees too.

As we played, the clouds and then rain returned.

But, some of this course is underground.

The rain did fill up some of the holes.

And, there were a few holes where it just didn’t mater if it was raining or not.

Then, we did the bumper boats.

There aren’t many photos of this as I couldn’t take photos and keep a couple of teenagers from pushing my boat into the rocks.
But, fun was had.

Then, off to the zip line. Unlike others this one puts you in a chair.

My wife and I sat this one out.

The kids liked it.

I do have video of them coming back down very fast, but I don’t know when I’ll get to it.

Technically this place is an ice cream stand that just has a lot of other things. So, we got ice cream and then headed home.
