Vacation photos day 1

Jul 21, 2018 19:41

The sun rose as we arrived in Europe.

It looked cloudy. Turned out these were close to the last clouds we’d see on vacation. But, at the time I thought "typical"…

They did open some as we came in to land.

Our hotel room was walking distance from the terminal. It had a strange red foyer.

The room was the same width as the length of the bed, and had the shower and toilet in Sci-Fi tubes in the room.

I had rented the room from the night we left so we’d have a place to go when we arrived. So, we slept for a few hours and then got up about noon.

We took a train into Amsterdam. The train terminal is also right there at the airport. So, it is a very convenient place to get places.

The train terminal looks nicer on the outside.

We took a tram over to the Riks museum. [https://www.rijksmuseum.nl ] (Same architect as the train station, can you tell?)

We were greeted by the largest Playmobile characters I’ve ever seen.

I’m afraid some of the photos from the museum are blurry. The lighting in the museum is OK to look at things, but hard to photograph. Ah well. Hopefully you’ll get the point.

It is a nice museum with lots of cool stuff. We did concentrate on things in the range that Phoenix Swords does the historical show. I paid particular attention to the costumes folks wore at the time.

They have other cool things too.

And, they had benches…

My wife loves stained glass.

The museum makes a whole lot of the "Night Watch" painting. My wife said "maybe we shouldn’t try and see it if it will be crowded". I said "don’t worry, you won’t be able to avoid it".
And, it is hard to avoid. Takes up the end of a hall that you can see over most of the floor.

They have lots of similar paintings with it. Again, I liked the whole thing with the outfits they were wearing.

Interesting things on drinking games.

Hats!

Sort of a hat…

My wife was surprised they had cannons. So, we made a point of seeing them.

And, spears…

After the museum, we crossed the street to the canal near the museum. (There are canals everywhere in Amsterdam…)

It’s a nice boat ride and you see lots of interesting buildings and bridges.

We didn’t touch the water there…

There are sections where the old city walls were, but aren’t any more.

Not the USS Constitution, but a similar ship.

We got off the boat tour back at the train station.

There are a lot of bicycles in Amsterdam.

We went off to the floating Chinese restaurant we saw from the boat tour.

There is a small chance we were just a bit tired.

As we ate, we discussed some strange ornamentation on top of these buildings. No idea what they are.

We also had fun watching the boats go by and watching the people on the boats. Lots of party boats.

We got out of the restaurant before the wedding started. (We did hear the band warming up…)

Then we walked back to the train station, and took a train back to our hotel at the airport.
