He hates morning.
Though he never said it out aloud; his distaste over the prickling sunshine, the chilled morning breezes and most of all, the maddening crowd rushing through the streets, are obvious sometimes.
“Ryo… you look like shit” his best friend chides, as soon as he steps into his car and slams the door almost violently.
“Thanks” he grumbles, didn’t even bother to roll his eyes “As if you’re looking that great.” Pulling out his sunglass, he gracefully slips it on, covering his puffy eyes.
“At least I don’t look like a zombie” Pi shook his head before stepping on the pedal, taking a sharp turn towards the main street. Sinking comfortably in his seat, Ryo ignores the driver, knowing well that the other was just enjoying his morning trolling. Pi is a morning person, after all.
Though their biological-clock differs, they do work well together “So where are we meeting Jin, this time?”
“He insisted that we have light breakfast at one of his fav café first, before heading to the site” Pi answers briefly.
Leaning in forward to change the radio station, Ryo scoffs a reply “I still think we should not take this project. Working for a friend never ended well.”
“We get along well” Pi quickly protests, slowing the car as the traffic light turns red.
“We have no choice. We owe our parents too much, in order to set up this event management company” Ryo complains, leaning back again onto the leather seat “Besides, you already broke the number one rules by marrying my sister.”
“Oh come on… Are you going to bring up that topic forever?” the guy grunts frustratingly.
“Forever” he gives Pi a lazy smirk instead.
“I hate you” the other retaliates; pouting childishly as he carefully pulls his car into the empty parking spot.
Tugging his jacket tighter, Ryo drags his cold feet, dodging the massive crowd as he follows Pi’s lead. After 5 minutes walk, they reach the said coffee shop, clearly amaze by the lavish contemporary art theme. The fusion of green and red gives it a modern touch, but at the same time, cozy and welcoming.
“Cool design right” a familiar voice interrupts them.
“Jin” Pi happily greets, pulling the guy into a friendly hug.
Before Jin could greet the other, Ryo quickly spats “Back off, I’m not hugging you.”
“I miss you too” Jin replies with his brightest smile, leading the two to his table; laptop, papers and a large mug of steaming black coffee are waiting.
As soon as they settle into their seats, Jin passes Ryo a menu “You definitely need some coffee. Want any recommendation?”
He flips the booklet briefly “Why are you so giddy over this place? Nothing special in the menu and…”
“Excuse me” a surprise remark interrupts his opening snarks.
Ryo looks up, staring at a smiling, unfamiliar face. A handsome, unfamiliar face, he would add. The stranger crosses his arms, feigning a protest “Sorry, but, I’m offended by such statement.”
“Ah Kazu, come let me introduce you to my friends” Jin quickly stands beside the guy, freely clinging to the medium height guy. With his smooth fair skins, luscious honey brown locks, paired with define features and smiling eyes, Ryo finally understands why Jin recommended the place. His eyes then lingers on the small nametag, carefully pinned on the guy’s crisp white shirt; Kamenashi.
“Meet my friends, Pi and Ryo” Jin happily introduces the guys.
Pi smile widely, giving the new acquaintance a friendly wave, while Ryo simply nod in acknowledgement.
“Please ignore him” Jin pats Ryo’s messy hair “He’s not a morning person.”
“He might bite” Pi offers, skillfully dodging a kick.
The barista smiles and casually leans down towards Ryo “Then I’ll highly recommend our ‘Best than sex, coffee’”
It’s really rare for him to be at the receiving end, blinking at the sudden advances, trying his best not to stammer “I doubt there’s any…”
“Hey Kazu, how come you never offered me such coffee?” Jin jumps in, sabotaging Ryo’s attempt to salvage his cool image.
The guy Jin called Kazu, gives out a musical giggles, flirtingly wink at him “Sorry Jin. This special coffee is not for straight guys.”
“I’m offended” Pi joins the fun.
“Sorry” the guy tilts his head slightly and Ryo swears he almost needs to wipe the drools off his face.
“Kazu” Jin tugs the guy’s sleeves “I’m Bisexual.”
“I know” he laughs, pulling his order book “And, I like Meisa-chan. She’s kinda bitchy; but definitely cool. Therefore, no special coffee for you…”
Then it strikes him “Are you saying I’m gay?”
The cute guy raises his brows and turns to Jin “Is he really this slow in the morning?”
Pi offers a reply instead “Every single morning.”
“Then, I better be quick with the order” he taps his small note book, noticing the small crowd just enter the shop.
“Decaf for me” Pi replies, setting the menu aside, eyes on Ryo now.
“And is it coffee for you?” Kamenashi asks Ryo, with hint of challenge, sparkles from his eyes.
“Earl grey please” Ryo accepts it.
“Rebel much” he clasps the book close and gives a slight bow “I like.”
And just like that, the guy disappears behind the counter, smiling brightly to his customers.
“Who the fuck is that guy?” Ryo asks as soon as Jin returns to his seat again.
“He’s awesome. This is the first time; someone shuts Ryo up this effectively” Pi let out a hearty laughter.
“Fuck off” he snorts “In my defense; it’s too early in the morning for me to ooze my pheromones. He has no chance if I do.”
“Kamenashi Kazuya. He’s the café owner” Jin smiles, carefully sipping the hot liquid “A client who happen to be Kazu’s friend, introduced this café to me. I would say this place is considerably small to be a commercial café; but with their exceptional brew and great service, I have nothing but positive confidence they’ll do great... Now, let’s talk about our business.”
The meeting goes on well, as Pi presents the proposal they work out the night before, to Jin. The guy seems really please and agrees to seal the deal soon. They then discuss the next route of action, scheduling for the next meeting and updates in the following week.
Everything is in order, except one; Kamenashi seems to be disappeared behind the mob of customers. Ryo can’t help it, feeling utterly annoyed when another young barista named Junno, delivers the order instead, smiling excessively at them.
After few cups of tea and coffee, bagel for each, and uncountable cancer sticks, they are ready to end the discussion and make a move. Unexpectedly Ryo offers to foot the bill, heading straight to the cashier, leaving his baffle friends behind. After he settles everything, he cautiously asks the tough looking guy “Is Kamenashi-kun around? Can you call him for me?”
Rolling his eyes, the guy walks away and calls out “Kame-chan. There’s this stalker looking guy wanted to see you.”
Ryo cringes, then another guy rushes to his side “Sorry about that. Koki is a bit possessive sometimes. Lucky for you Ueda’s is on leave” he says and then blushes for no apparent reason “Ah sorry for rambling. Kame will be here any minute.”
“Ah thanks Maru. I’ll take it from here” Kamenashi pats his colleague’s shoulder. The guy nods politely and walks away. “Anything I can help?” Kamenashi asks casually with the same bright smile.
“I wanted to apologize for my rude behaviors this morning” Ryo offers, bowing slightly to Kamenashi.
“Ah I see. You’re fully awake now aren’t you?” the guy teases him with a wink, nervously licking his lips.
“Yeah. With all those caffeine streaming in my blood now, I’m more than awake” his trademark smirk graces his lips.
“Great. Well, you don’t have to apologize at all. I’m so used to morning zombies, I’m a professional zombie slayer” he let out another beautiful laughter.
“Excellent” Ryo quips lightly, slowly tuning in his charms “But, you know what, I’m more interested in your special coffee, actually.”
Kamenashi quirks his beautiful plucks eyebrows “The better than sex coffee?”
“Yes. I would like to try and revoke the myth” Ryo answers confidently, eyes exploring on Kamenashi. He then leans closer and sensually whispers “I don’t believe there’s anything that can be better than sex. Especially, if it’s with me…”
“Hmm. If that’s the case, I suggest you try our Green Tea Frappuccino” he casually points at the menu, smiling innocently “With whipped cream, of course.”
“Excuse me” he stares blankly at the young barista, wondering whether he had been rejected.
“I think, small will do” he adds “Koki, one Green Tea Frappucino to go… Don’t worry, it’s on the house. Just collect your drink at that counter” Kamenashi points to where Nakamaru stands.
With that, the guy walks away, joining his team behind the coffee bar.
Feeling the awful taste of rejection, Ryo quickly gathers his stuffs and heads to the door, where Jin and Pi awaits, enjoying their cigarettes.
“Sir, your drinks” the annoying, excessive smiling guy, brings a green concoction in his hand.
Ryo wants to simply walk away. But his eyes caught a fine scribbling on the plastic container. He takes his drinks and examines it closer, noting a phone number and a short message:
I’ll brew coffee for you
Perfect.
He is starting to love the morning smell.
