~ @ ~ @ ~ Chapter 2 ~ @ ~ @ ~
Love is overrated.
That’s how he has always believed it. Some may say that he’s a bitter prick who’s afraid to open up. But the truth is he sees things for its practicality and objective, which happens to apply to love as well. Feelings and emotions just make things complicated.
Hence, when his friends talk about butterflies in the stomach and ridiculous heartbeats, he’ll just laughs his ass off and explain smugly that it’s a chemical reaction called adrenaline. And, all this while The Great Akanishi Jin believes he’s immune to it.
Unfortunately, that chemical reaction is attacking his system at that very moment.
“Are you just going to stand there and watch me or are you going to join us for some action” the sensual voice suddenly jolts him back to reality. The surreal reality as he stares back at those daring brown eyes.
He blinks irately at the statement, knowing well that he has used it numerous times before. The table has really been turned this time. “I’m ~” again he is at a loss for words mid-sentence.
“Well I need you here” the smoldering guy pats the couch’s armrest, signaling him to come forward. The beautiful smirk is so definite; he’s cursing himself inside for the ridiculous heartbeats.
Instantly, he slips on the slightly damp white shirt which amazingly survives without a stain after the quick rescue. And with his expensive jacket on, the crime scene is perfectly concealed.
He bites his lower lip, trying to stay focused on his small steps when his eyes strays to his best friend who is grinning mockingly across the room, crossing his legs on the couch “Well, you are the best man after all.”
Jin narrows his eyes, threatening the groom to shut up. But unfortunately, he’s fighting a losing battle. Slowly he walks forward, looking straight at the clown in tuxedo, trying his best to ignore the strong presence of the photographer.
“That’s better. Why don’t you sit on the armrest” the guy instructs with a small gleam in his eyes as he takes a few steps back before hiding his dark eyes behind the lenses aiming the at the groom-to-be and his side-kick “Big smile please!”
“Where did you find this guy?” he asks under his breath, behind the fake smile.
“He’s gorgeous isn’t he? I almost choked on my dinner when he showed up at my wedding rehearsal 2 days ago. I mean I’m straight of course but he’s something else, don’t you think?” Yamapi leans in to gossip shamelessly right in front of the dedicated photographer.
“No wonder Keiko’s being paranoid” soft chuckles escaped his throat.
“Hey, I am straight” the man exclaims defensively with a visible pout.
“Sure you are” the guy interrupts with an amused smirk, seeing Yamapi squirming in embarrassment. “Why don’t both of you move there next” pointing out to the two sitter couch. They dutifully make their move “I’ll be taking candid shots now. Do relax and feel at ease.”
“Yeah right. How am I supposed to that with those fierce looking eyes observing me behind the lenses?” he curses silently.
Yamapi leans back comfortably before turning to his best man “He’s one of Kitagawa’s family friends.”
The camera flashes freely as they continue their hushed conversations.
“So, are you going to make yourself useful and introduce us already?” he reaches for his half empty drink, and takes a generous sip trying to calm his nerves.
“Careful with that” the guy teases him with a gleam in his eyes.
He swallows his invisible saliva, placing the glass down carefully.
“Well, I don’t mind introducing you, but with that unexpected cat-caught-your-tongue act, I doubt you can go far” Yamapi laughs teasingly which earns him a light kick on the shin.
“So are you guys best friends” the prominent photographer suddenly surprises them with a small conversation whilst clicking the device devotedly.
“We were housemates during our college time” Yamapi offers sensing Jin is too tongue-tied for a decent conversation.
“I see. Just the two of you?” he continues to snap the pictures, moving around gracefully. Jin feels his body heat up just looking at the slender fingers working on the lenses.
”There’s another guy. He’ll be here soon I hope” his best friend replies lightly.
Then suddenly the door swings open almost violently “Sorry I’m late. Ueda was being a bitch.”
“Ryo” both exclaims excitedly as the other best man walks in without any reservation.
Jin is genuinely happy to see Ryo there, knowing the guy’s dark sense of humor might help him ease the tense. But unfortunately he feels his heart stop beating when the dark haired guy suddenly stops his track next to the dashing photographer and extended his hand fluidly.
“Oh, hey there. Did it hurt when you fell from the sky?” the blatant bastard sure did not waste a minute to lash his lame pick up lines, much to Jin’s dismay.
Then Jin sees Kamenashi-kun raise his perfectly trimmed brows “Sorry?”
Ryo beams excitedly “You know when you fell to earth. You’re an angel right?”
Both Yamapi and Jin rolls their eyes in annoyance. They’ve heard Ryo lame pick-up lines so many times before. But what they haven’t seen in awhile is Ryo’s pale face when a witty comeback surprises him “Wow, I haven’t heard that pick-up lines in ages. Does it ever work?”
Ryo blinks furiously; jaws open while his two friends laugh so hard without any intention of being discrete.
“So you’re the other best man. Well, better join them now or you’ll miss all the fun” Kamenashi-kun points to the other two laughing guys.
For the very first time in history, Yamapi and Jin sees the supposed Sexy Osaka Man, bowing awkwardly as he makes his way to his two best friends “Who the hell is that?” he asks in a hush voice.
“Closer please” the photographer instructs. Jin notices the hint of amusement in his voice.
“He’s mine” without any sense of hesitation, Jin declares his interest.
Jin turns around and sees a deep frown marring Ryo’s forehead “Who died and made you king?” he barks defensively.
“Well, who asked you to be late? The earlier bird gets the worms” Jin replies smugly.
Ryo lets out another haughty laughter “Well, with his look, I doubt it’s a worm we are fighting for here.”
“Oh my god! That’s so disgusting” Yamapi who is sitting right in the middle exclaims in pure torment.
“I second that” all three of them freezes in their seats and slowly turns to the source of interruption.
There stands Kame with his camera on his left hand while his other hand rests on his shapely waist “Don’t you guys think you are being a bit too loud.” Kamenashi-kun speaks with sense of justice, sensually showing his amused smile “Especially when the topic of interest is standing in the same room, right in front of you.”
At that very moment, Jin wishes the leather couch would just eat the three of them alive. No wonder his mother used to call them The Three Stooges. They simply are prone to ridicule themselves in front of potential soul mates.
**************************
The photographer has excused himself to the bride’s room after the unexpected moment of sheer mortification from the three supposed reputable and successful eligible bachelors. Well, soon to be two as Yamapi is the first one to tie the knot.
While Ryo may look as much as a playboy as the others, he’s actually devoted to Ueda. Devoted in his very own way that is.
“Is Ueda coming?” Jin carefully asks as they steps outside of Yamapi’s room, giving him some space to calm down his wrecked nerves.
Ryo gracefully slips a thin cigarette between his lips and lights it. He offers the half empty box to Jin who shakes his head slightly. Ryo inhales deeply before answering the question “We had a fight last night. Not sure whether he’s coming or not.”
Jin gives out a weak smile to his best friend, not wanting to bother asking what the issue they were fighting off, knowing how petty they usually are.
The two have been together for such a long time. It’s amazing how the two managed to stay together with the constant bickering and all. He guesses, some relationships are worth the fights and all.
“So are you really interested in that photographer guy?” Ryo’s question surprises Jin.
“Well, he’s making me feel those things I never thought I’d feel” he confesses sheepishly.
Jin feels Ryo’s intense eyes on him “The adrenaline rush is it?”
He nods softly “Yup, that unexpected adrenaline rush.”
**************************
“Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen - Let me first say that the bridesmaids look absolutely gorgeous today, and only rightly are outshone by our bride, Keiko-chan. And, I'm sure you'll agree with me gentlemen, today is a sad day for single men, as another beauty leaves the available list. But of course, instead of being a sore loser, I would like to invite all of you to give Yamashita-san the kudos for it” Jin pauses for awhile, allowing the crowd’s cheers to simmer down before continuing. But as he scans the crowd for a certain signal, his eyes catches the sight of the photographer who lowered his camera to give him an encouraging smile.
He took another deep breath and continues “Yamashita-san has been a great friend to me over the years and there are many things I admire about him. He is the most level-headed man I know and, along with his generosity and determination, there is one other thing that stands out, and that is his appreciation of quality. And today, Yamapi, you’ve really surpassed yourself. You have found a lady of true quality in Keiko-chan. It’s been an honour and a privilege to be your best man today and I hope that one day I’ll be asking you to return the same honour for me. Because let’s face it, I've got even fewer friends than you” merry laughter accompanies him as he raises his glass “Here to love, laughter and happily ever after, as Yamashita Tomohisa and Kitagawa Keiko starts their new life as husband and wife.”
***************************
“Oh hello there” Yamapi’s mother greets him with a smile too bright for his comfort.
He leans closer to kiss her “Yamashita-san, you look gorgeous today.”
“And you are still a sweet talker as you have always been. That was such a great speech you did just now” she freely slips her hand around his back and leads him to wherever she has her mind on. Jin who has known her for ages did not protest, knowing perfectly how futile it might be. “I have few friends I wants you to meet.”
Sure he has no intention to argue, but that doesn’t mean he’s not looking for his chance of escape. But none is available as Yamapi is busy entertaining the guests while Ryo is busy flirting with the cute waiter he has his eyes on.
“Ah here’s the fine man we were talking about. Akanishi Jin” Yamashita-san introduces him to two beautiful ladies.
“Nice to meet you” the first lady bows politely. “I’m Yuriko and this is my daughter Yukino.”
He smiles sweetly as he returned the pleasantries with a respectful bow “Nice to meet you.” He’s been in that situation before and is perfectly aware of the drill.
“I was just saying to my daughter here that your speech was so well written. Short and sweet” Yuriko starts the conversation calmly, giving eye signals to Yamashita-san.
Jin flashes his winning smile “Thanks.”
“Yuriko-san, I have someone I want you to meet. Why don’t we leave the youngsters to themselves?” as expected, Yamashita-san grabs Yuriko’s arms and leads her away, leaving Jin with Yukino.
“So, are you related to the Yamashita in anyway?” Jin starts the conversation.
He expected more, but the girl’s only reply by shaking her head.
“Well, Yamapi and I went to the same college. We were roommates” Jin trying his best to lighten up the conversation.
The awkwardness is slowly eating Jin’s consciousness as he waits for the girl to pick up the conversation. Sensing none surfacing anytime soon, Jin continues “Do you want any drinks?”
The girl nods and Jin quickly step away heading to the refreshment table with a soft sigh.
From their early years in college, Yamashita-san had treated him and Ryo like her own sons. And that’s the problem. She freely meddled in their love life knowing well, the two will never argue because they love her just as much. She never fails to amuse him on her forays at matchmaking.
Two glasses of white wine are in his hands when a certain someone surprises him from behind “That was a great speech.”
The glasses tumble a bit leaving droplets of white wine stain the white table spread “Not again.”
“Oops. Sorry. Didn’t mean to scare you there” the guy takes both glasses from his hand and places it on the table. He then takes out a blue striped handkerchief and hands it to Jin.
“No, I didn’t mean it that way” his eyes fixed on the smaller figure in front of him.
“I know” he replies swiftly. “I just want to congratulate you for the well delivered speech. I guess I’m not the only one who finds it interesting.” Jin follows the guys’ gaze which fell on the girl he just escaped from.
“I have practiced quite few times” he replies modestly, feeling his face getting hotter suddenly.
The sincere smile slowly forms into a teasing smirk. Jin cannot help being enchanted by all those small changes that happens right in front of his eyes “I am surprised that you made your speech so smoothly there. I thought you are a stutterer before” he takes a sip of the red wine he has in his hand while the other hand was securely holding the camera.
Jin lets out a nervous laughter, eyeing the guy cautiously “I’m usually a smooth talker.”
“Oh really” a soft smug plastered over his thin lips. “You had me fooled then.”
“I guess we started on the wrong foot earlier” he shoves the handkerchief into his pocket and extends his hands “I’m Akanishi Jin, Yamapi’s best friend.”
“Wrong foot indeed” the musical laughter fills his ears. Jin’s feels his system being attacked again. “I’m Kamenashi Kazuya. The wedding photographer” as their hands touches, Jin could swear he feels electricity run down his spine “Nice to meet you.”
“It’s a pleasure” he replies with all the calmness he could muster right at that very moment. “So, how did you find the wedding?”
Kamenashi-kun takes another sip of his drink “It’s nice. Not too crowded and the weather is perfect.”
Jin takes another deep breath “So, do you have plans after this?”
The question may have surprised the photographer, but he sure didn’t show it “Are you asking me out?”
Jin feels his hands getting cold “I might be.”
“Well, ask me again when you decide you are” he replies with a teasing smile.
He curses himself for not being straightforward enough and letting his chance slip. He’s about to change his answer when a soft hesitating voice interrupts them “Ano, Akanishi-san.”
Then he sees, the guy in front of him took a step forward and leans down to the girl and politely replies to her “I’m sorry dear for taking Jin away from you for too long. I better make myself useful and take more pictures.” He straightens his back again and turns to Jin “See you around.”
Again Jin is left with his unexpected bad luck as Kame disappears behind the lively crowd, thinking he might need to consider a new tactic for the next round.
