Jin hates weddings.
Well, the statement might be a bit too harsh but his sentiment that goes with it can’t be denied. The trouble that he has to go through to find the perfect wedding gift without being labeled cheap or cheesy, the fuss he has to endure to dress up in a proper suit without looking like he’s heading to a funeral instead and most of all he hates the fake smiles he has to force every time someone asks where his date is. Yup, he hates weddings.
And to add to his misery, he is chosen as the best man for this particular auspicious day.
“Where the hell are you” his caller practically screams to his ears. Jin put it on speaker mode and places it on the centre of the dashboard.
“Driving” he lies confidently without any hesitations. But then again, he is not really lying. He’s in the car, putting on the seatbelt and would have already been driving on the road if the caller isn’t insistent enough to make him pick up with the unceremonious blaring of his phone.
“You better get your ass here soon or I’m so gonna kill you” the high-pitched tone filled his car.
“Hai~” he replies dully trying to concentrate on reversing his car instead. “Lightened up will you. It’s just a wedding.”
“It’s my fucking wedding, you asshole” is the reply he gets. But somehow the answer makes him smile because he is expecting something along those lines.
“Well, if you stop talking to me now, I might be there before your ex-girlfriend knocks on your door” he’s finally on the road which seems a bit too quiet for a Saturday afternoon.
“She already did” is the unexpected reply.
He tries to hold back his laughter, shutting his mouth close, turning bright red. But it erupts in a massive guffaw instead “OMG. Tell me all about it. I’ll be there in 15 minutes.”
*************************
‘Garden weddings are so overrated’ Pi told him a few months back when he dropped the bombshell that he is getting hitched that summer. So the so-called-fabulous couple decides to have a beach wedding instead. Sure he tries to reason out with his head-over-heels in love friend about all the cons that can happen at a beach wedding, he even throws in tsunami as one of the main points, but of course love prevails.
So as a result, there he is, donning a classic RayBan, clad in his most expensive suit; sweating like a pig, enduring the bright and sunny day. Four white canopies with a small dance floor right in the middle of the square is decorated with lilies and orchids. Trust the couple to spend lavishly on a wedding that some of their friends are already betting how long the marriage will last. At least he is nice enough to decline from participating when Ryo has pulled out his betting book few days ago.
Further up, the altar is nicely arranged on a small platform adjoined with a red carpet decorated with pink petals.
Jin is still smirking observing the cliché set up when a quirky voice interrupts him “Hello there. You’re Yamashita-san’s best man right?”
He turns around and flashes his award winning smile to the petite girl dressed in a cheerful pink dress “Hello there. I’m Akanishi” he politely extends his hand to the stranger.
“I’m Nanami. I’m Keiko’s bridesmaid” she accepts Jin’s hand a bit too eagerly.
He gives out a small nod, wondering whether Keiko is intending to piss him further with an unwanted matchmaking scheme. In his already long list of why he hated weddings, matchmaking by nosy relatives and friends is on the top.
“Keiko and Pi have talked a lot about you” she sheepishly continues when Jin didn’t bother to pick up the conversation.
Yup the two unbelievable couple did it. Maybe he should give Ryo a call later and place that bet. “I’m sure they did. Can you point out where’s Pi is hiding.”
“Why don’t I bring you there instead” she leads the way with Jin following close behind with a smug face.
They walk through the canopied area again but this time Jin’s eyes caught sight of a beautiful stranger standing in the middle of the vacant parquet dance floor looking admiringly at the blue sky. He is holding an expensive looking camera to his chest. Sensually his thin lips twitches upward forming an appreciative smile. The only word Jin can think of at that moment is mesmerizing.
But the serene moment is halted by a loud cluttering sound.
“Oh dear, are you alright?” the girl called Nanami turns around and asks him.
Only then he realizes that he has just clumsily bumped into one of the decorative flower bouquets and practically squashed it with his shiny shoes. He felt his face burn bright red “I’m alright.”
When he straightens his back again and glances at the source of his momentary clumsiness, the stranger is practically staring back at him with dazzling eyes. Seconds later, Jin swore the beautiful enchanted smile transforms into a challenging smirk right in front of his eyes. The stranger surprises him further when he gave him a small nod.
“Do you know Kamenashi-kun?” Nanami jolts him back to reality.
He blinked furiously trying to connect the dot.
Sensing his inability to form a proper sentence at that moment, the girl offered sweetly “The photographer. Kamenashi Kazuya. I heard he’s a prominent figure in the field; having his own exhibition, photobook and a posh gallery.”
“But of course, Pi and Keiko will only get the best for their dream wedding” Jin finally manages to pull his cool act once again.
Secretly, his gaze travels to the dance floor again. But unfortunately the so-called photographer seems to vanish through thin air.
He was still looking around when his phone vibrates violently. Jin fishes it out and reads out the name. With a deep heave he flips it open and holds it at arm length expecting the caller to be screaming “WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?”
******************
“So what do you think?” Pi asks as he twirls happily in front of his best man.
Jin rolls his eyes and sighs “You look like a penguin.”
“I do not!” he barks back before abruptly turning to face the full length mirror.
“You look great. This is your wedding so stop worrying already” he hurriedly goes over to Pi’s side and give his best friend a brotherly tug.
“Thanks” the husband-to-be replies gratefully before settling in the white fluffy couch.
Jin sits across him, taking a sip of the red wine served earlier “So, are you going to fill me in the details about Aibu-chan”
Pi let out a hundred years worth of sigh before replying to his best friend “She came by to return the necklace I gave her years ago.”
“Do you still have feelings for her?” he raises his brows curiously.
“Of course not!” Pi denies defensively. “It just felt so awkward. Jin, you do believe I have made the right choice right?”
He bites his tongue in an attempt not to laugh, and proudly he succeeds this time around “I believe you made the best choice indeed.” He always believes that little white lies will go a long way.
And he is awarded with a grateful smile from Pi “Well, talking about feelings, how do you find Nanami-chan?”
Jin shakes his head and narrows his eyes “You don’t want to go there my friend.”
“Why not” Pi asks with a wide devilish smirk on his face which is followed by a musical laughter. “Keiko has this brilliant plan of setting you up with Nanami.”
“I thought you have told her that I’m gay” Jin takes another sip of the red liquid.
Pi nods affirmatively “I did. But she said that anything can be changed with a little encouragement.”
“Well, I do appreciate little miss sunshine trying to fix my love life, but apparently I’m happy being un-straight” he gives him his model citizen smile.
“I guess she’s kinda worried if I end up having feelings for you or something” Pi replies sheepishly and Jin cannot help making funny faces along with it.
“OMG, you didn’t tell her about our drunken night in Osaka did you” Jin exclaims dramatically.
“What drunken night? I don’t remember any” Pi stands up, panic written all over his face.
“Because there’s none of course” Jin happily informs the horror stricken groom. The deep frown falters delightfully.
“You are such a pig” Pi throws a small cushion to his best friend which Jin successfully dodges and both of them ends up laughing hysterically.
They were still high when soft knocks can be heard from the door “Come in.”
“Sorry to interrupt, I’m here to take some pictures of the groom” the beautiful stranger who put Jin in trance earlier is standing tall at the door frame, holding a camera with his free hand.
He gulps nervously staring at the gorgeous guy clad in an expensive looking dark grey striped suit with a matching rich smile. Totally unaware of the red wine glass he is holding awhile ago slipping off until he heard Pi’s girly shriek “Jin, your shirt!”
He snaps out of it and sees red stain blotches on his white shirt “Shit.” He pulls his handkerchief and quickly dabs on the stain.
“Stop” a strong grip suddenly circles around his wrist. “Take your shirt off.”
Jin looks up and saw the deep brown-eyed stranger standing inches from him, stopping him from dabbing the red stain. “Huh?” is the smartest comment he can come up with.
Slowly the smirk appears again “No, I’m not trying to hit on you. I’m just trying to save you from ruining that expensive shirt.”
He is still blinking at the guy when he feels soft flesh working on his buttons “It’s okay. I can do it myself” Jin is finally able to form a proper sentence much to his dismay.
After almost a full minute of torture, trying to undo the buttons under the watchful gaze of the stranger, Jin finally manages to get the shirt off. Unfortunately for him, the stranger is not the only one judging him at that moment, his bastard of a best friend is enjoying the moment as well.
Pi who is sitting at one corner without a single word is grinning devilishly at The Great Jin Akanishi being all timid and shy. If only Ryo is there to witness the holy ceremony.
The stranger who is waiting at the refreshment table which he have already cleared up for his rescue mission, holds his hand towards Jin. Jin takes a deep breath before making his way towards the dazzling creature and hands him the shirt.
He can’t help admiring the slender fingers dabbing some white liquid from the prepared glass and blotting the stain skillfully. His eyes then travels to the soft pale skin of his face when he is startled that the guy is glancing back at him. Then he hears a soft voice which is meant only for him “Are you always this clumsy or is it because of me?”
He opens his mouth to shoot out a smart comeback. But nothing comes up. Yup The Great Jin Akanishi is in deep trouble.
