Chapter 43. Three to Four Hours, Give or Take

“Paper, scissors, rock!”

Four hands shot out, one with paper and the rest holding rock.

“Hah! I’m not driving!” Yuki exclaimed, leaving the other three to play another round. A chorus of complaints came from the other three girls as Yuki hopped into the van.

They had been standing outside the van for almost ten minutes, arguing about who was driving there. In the end, they decided to settle this with “paper, scissors, rock”.

“Why did we choose to decide this way?” Asuka complained.

“Because it’s the easiest way--”

“Even when we know Yuki always wins,” Asuka cut off Lexi.

The three brought their balled fists to the middle in another round and Lexi groaned while the other two shared a high-five and piled into the van. Asuka chucked her the keys and Lexi muttered some curse in her mother tongue before dragging herself to the driver’s seat. She jumped up and shut the door, pulling on her seatbelt and putting the key into ignition.

“I hate that game,” she mumbled and it was followed by a soft male chuckle. Lexi turned to her left to see Junho in the passenger seat. He shot her his infamous eye smile and her heart skipped a beat. Why did his smile have such an effect on her?

She tried to calm herself down by taking deep breaths to slow down her heart rate. While doing so, she put the keys into the ignition and started the engine. She kept chanting in her head that she wasn’t going to faint and that Junho sitting shotgun would not be a distraction. Just as she made that thought, Junho leaned half his body over the gear shift to grab something from the back of the van. His perfect posterior was in her line of vision and she had to bite down on her lip to prevent herself from squealing. Her hands were gripping the steering wheel so tight that her knuckles were turning white, all because she was afraid they would stray elsewhere. So much for not a distraction.

He sat back up and looked at her, raising an eyebrow at her and Lexi quickly looked away. Great, now she knew she was staring. She checked her mirrors one last time before reversing out of the parking spot and onto the road.

Asuka would usually make a comment about her roommate’s actions but right now, all that seemed to be occupying her mind was trying to remember what happened last night. Bits and pieces came back to her but they were fuzzy. All she knew was it wasn’t something great and involved Taecyeon.

She decided to sit away from said male and ended up sitting by the door. Wooyoung ended up sitting next to her and found it odd that 2PM’s rapper was seated at the back corner. He had noticed Taecyeon acting stranger than usual this morning but thought nothing of it. Now, Wooyoung wasn’t so sure.

Junsu nudged Wooyoung through the back of his chair and the younger turned around. Junsu motioned his head to Asuka and Wooyoung shrugged. He didn’t have a clue what was going on with her and he wasn’t planning on asking. He had a feeling that the female would bite his head off. Maybe he could get one of her friends to. Yuki and Ana were seated directly behind her so he just needed to find a way…

“Hey, how long’s the trip again?” Nichkhun suddenly asked, breaking Wooyoung’s concentration.

“Three to four hours, give or take,” Asuka replied plainly, her attention focused outside.

“It’s gonna be a long ride,” Wooyoung muttered to himself. He pulled out his music player and plugged an earphone into his left ear.

Taecyeon knew it was partially his fault Asuka was avoiding him. Even though he was almost certain that the female had no recollection of what happened last night. He however remembered everything clearly…well mostly everything. Taecyeon was still beating himself up inside for acting the way he did and rambling on. He hated how “Drunk Taec” always led to him being brutally honest. Though he wished he remembered who he drunk called this time.

He didn’t miss the exchange Wooyoung and Junsu had and hoped that they wouldn’t get involved. Of course they only had his best interest at heart but this was something he had to sort alone.

His gaze fell on Asuka and he noticed earphones plugged into her ears. It was something she often did to avoid confrontation with anyone. Like a defence mechanism, except this was a physical item instead of a psychological one. She used music to block out all thoughts and surroundings to avoid or just forget about the situation.

Knowing he could do nothing about it, Taecyeon decided to follow suit. He pulled out his own music player and closed his eyes. Maybe sleep would help with his memory or give him an idea on how to make up with Asuka.

After leaving the apartment building, Asuka took Taecyeon to the local university bar five minutes away. Once reaching there, Taecyeon went straight to the counter and ordered a jug1.

“Can you afford that?” Asuka asked. He shrugged and took the jug along with two glasses to an empty booth.

Taecyeon knew drinking himself into oblivion would be no help, but right now that was all he could do to ease the pain and forget their previous conversation. He saw the concern in Asuka’s eyes but he couldn’t care less. Right now nothing could erase what had happened. Maybe he should just keep his stupid mouth shut next time. He knew Asuka wasn’t cut out for all this sentimental crap.

“Hey, I thought you weren’t working tonight?” a male voice sounded. Taecyeon filled his glass and drank half of it before the male even reached the table.

“I’m not.”

From the way she greeted him, Taecyeon assumed the male was the bar manager.

“Just thought I’d show my friend here where I worked,” she motioned to Taecyeon.

The manager held out his hand, “Oh, it’s finally nice to meet the boyfriend everyone’s been talking about.”

Taecyeon returned the handshake. “Nice to hear my girlfriend likes to talk so much about me,” he replied. Asuka blushed at the comment. If it wasn’t for that one night Lexi blurted out their relationship (she swore to never give Lexi shots ever again) to the whole student body, no one would even think twice of asking her.

Taecyeon and her manager exchanged a few more words before he left. Once he left, Taecyeon turned back to Asuka and she noticed that stupid grin return to his face. Even though it did relieve her to see this side of him again, she knew this wasn’t going to be fun on her end.

“So...” he begun, “you talk about me a lot huh?” She rolled her eyes and he nudged her with his elbow. “What kinds of things do you say?”

“Taec, I’m not…no,” she shook her head.

“Come on baby.” Again she shook her head. “Fine,” Taecyeon brought his hand up to motion for the manager to come back when a hand over his mouth and another slapping his hand down stopped him. Luckily the manager was nowhere in sight.

“Really, you’d go through all that?” she questioned. Her hands were still over his mouth and left hand respectively. She couldn’t let him see that she was enjoying just holding his hand like this. Taecyeon nodded. “You never fail to surprise me,” she said to herself. Taecyeon wiggled his eyebrows and slowly peeled her hand off his mouth

The group had stopped outside a joint gas station and fast food outlet. They had entered the fast food restaurant and were lucky enough to get a whole row of tables next to each other. Lexi was looking at the map, trying to pinpoint exactly where they were.

Nichkhun sniggered, “We’re lost aren’t we?”

Lexi shot him a glare and pushed up her glasses, “We are not lost, Khun,”

“Sure we aren’t,” he muttered. In reply he received a kick from Lexi and a punch from Asuka. “Ow, why are you hitting me?” he whined. Asuka didn’t reply to him. She only shrugged before getting up to throw away their fast food rubbish, Yuki and Ana helping her.

Chansung shook his head in disapproval, “You’re supposed to be a gentleman, Khun-hyung. Way to ruin 2PM’s image,”

“Oh shut up,” the other members laughed at Nichkhun’s retort.

Nichkhun didn’t see the need to keep up the angelic charade here in New Zealand. There were no Korean paparazzi around or journalists so he could finally just be himself. Not that he wasn’t a gentleman; he just wasn’t the guy the media put him out to be. Besides, his members knew exactly how he was like and Asuka would probably just out him to her friends anyway.

He looked up to see Wooyoung hiding a laugh and shot him a look. So much for Khunyoung. Wooyoung straightened up but didn’t wipe the smirk off his face. Nichkhun sent him a kick from across the table and the younger male whined.

“Khun-hyung, just because there’s no reporters doesn’t mean you can abuse me,” Wooyoung whined, rubbing his left shin. Again Chansung shook his head and Junho made a “tsk-ing” remark. Nichkhun sighed and rolled his eyes.

“Okay, I think I know how to get there,” Lexi said as she stood up. “Suke, meet you at the van. We’ll leave in 10 minutes. If anyone needs to go to the bathroom, well go,” with that she made her way out of the fast food outlet. The gang followed behind.

Nichkhun was about to follow out when he noticed one of the guys missing. “Oh Suke,” he stopped the girl from leaving.

“Yeah,”

“Where’s Taec?”

Asuka shrugged, “Toilet prob-oh look,” she stopped herself as Taecyeon emerged out the bathroom. With that she left.

As Taecyeon headed out of the bathroom, Nichkhun intercepted his way towards the van. Taecyeon only sent him a look but Nichkhun didn’t budge. Instead he pulled his friend aside. They were regrouping in five minutes so Nichkhun knew he had time.

“Khun, please just leave it,” Taecyeon urged.

“Look, I know--”

“Just don’t okay,” Taecyeon tried to walk away but a strong grip on his forearm stopped him.

“That phone call,” Nichkhun simply said.

“What are you talking about?”

Nichkhun relayed the phone conversation, well voicemail, Taecyeon left him last night. Taecyeon ranted on about how he couldn’t handle this relationship anymore and that he and Asuka were over. The details were vague about the break up but all Taecyeon said was that it was over. There were no mentions of how it came about and why, just that it was over.

“And you immediately hung up on me mid-rant,” Nichkhun finished.

“Khun, you didn’t even answer your phone. And besides, I was drunk,” Taecyeon scratched the back of his head. He recalled the phone call alright, it was just the Nichkhun only knew half the story. “I didn’t know what I was saying. Just forget it happened, alright?”

He patted the Thai on the shoulder before walking away. Nichkhun sighed not knowing how to get the younger male to open up. Truth was, when Taecyeon was drunk, he was more often than not dead serious.

Taecyeon leaned against the outside wall and sighed. It wouldn’t be long until Nichkhun found out he was lying to him and would make him confront Asuka about it.  Who was he kidding though?

He knew he had to eventually talk to Asuka about what had happened. Hell, he wasn’t even sure if they had actually broken up. Then again, they never did make it official that they were in a relationship. Thinking about it now, Taecyeon didn’t know how to define his relationship with Asuka. Yes, her friends saw him as the boyfriend. Her manager even called him that but was that what they really were?

Boyfriend and girlfriend. It held a lot of responsibility with it. Taecyeon understood that their relationship (well that was the only thing he could call it) was not normal in all senses of the word and that he should really expect the unexpected with Asuka. But still, he would like to define the relationship.

He spotted Asuka hopping into the van with the others following her. It had only been two hours and they still had about an hour or so left of road to cover.  This so-called getaway was not getting off to a very great start.

Stumbling out the door, Taecyeon fished for his phone and dialled a number automatically. He hoped the male had remembered to switch plans to receive his call.

“Buck, pick up the phone dammit,” Taecyeon muttered.

“Hey, this is Khun,” he sighed in relief only to be let down by a following voicemail message.

“Khun, it’s Taec. The one time I need to talk to you, you don’t even answer your phone,” Taecyeon ran his hand through his hair in frustration. He couldn’t wait until Nichkhun was free so he decided he might as well say what he called to say.

“Khun, it’s over. Me and Suke, we’re done. She was right; something this serious would’ve never worked. We were too close friends to begin with. It was a disaster in the making--”

“Taec!” a female voice stopped him mid-rant and he immediately hung up.

He turned to see Asuka walking towards him. Shock was evident in her eyes.

“How much did you hear?”

“Enough,” she replied. “Taec, I don’t wanna break up,” her words were becoming muffled as her eyes began to well up. “I didn’t--I never wanted that. Those things I said, I, you, us. I was scared. To be honest, no one’s ever said that to me. It’s always been the other way round. That’s why act so distant and detached--”

“I can’t deal with this right now, Suke,” he cut her off and began walking away. He lost balance and leaned on the brick wall for support. Asuka ran over to help him but he tried to brush her away.

“You’re in no state to go by yourself. And you don’t even know where you are,”

“Then what do you suggest?” he was clearly pissed and drunk. “You drank as much as me,” he slurred.

“Actually, I’ve only had ginger ale the whole night. I was afraid,” she motioned to him, “would happen. Come on, apartment’s the other way.”

Asuka lifted his arm and draped it over her shoulder for support. Taecyeon didn’t say anything and just stumbled back home, with the support of Asuka. All he wanted was to sleep and forget this night.
