The trick to eating ice cream was to catch it right when it began to melt over the edge of the cone. Arthur followed the slow swipe of Merlin's tongue around the edge of the sugar cone and looked away, picking at his cup of frozen yogurt. When Merlin had come to him after a period of intensive studying where Arthur managed to beat his latest DS game and learn that mitosis had something to do with cells and suggested they get out of the rooms Arthur thought he meant go for a walk, or go catch a movie, or go to a puppy park, because Merlin was strangely infatuated with every small mammal in existence, but he hadn't expected ice cream.
The sun was beginning to set pink and purple behind the trees and bugs were singing with the dying heat by the time they were finishing. Ice cream coated Merlin's fingers from nail to knuckle with a meandering trail of rainbow sprinkles. Arthur stared down into his half eaten cup with a frown and a sigh. He disposed of it in the bin by the bench and stood, wiping his hands along the seams of his trousers.
Midterms loomed on the horizon and if they didn't go back to study, this time with the intent to learn something, Merlin would fail brilliantly, Arthur would pass with a high mark, but not high enough and he would never hear the end of it.
"Merlin."
Merlin hummed around his treat and let out a strangled yelp when Arthur artfully swiped it out from Merlin's clutch and tossed it toward the bin.
"You're a mess," Arthur chided, lifting Merlin's dripping, ice cream coated hand for further inspection. "Someone's going to mistake you for their toddler and try to take you home with them." Carefully, he sucked one of the fingers into his mouth and smirked around it. "You can't expect me to explain that to your mother."
"No, I suppose not." Merlin whimpered and Arthur needed no further incentive to release that finger and sweep Merlin into a sweet kiss. Studying could wait a few minutes longer.
