“But momma I don’ wanna go ta kindergarden,” Samantha whined, pulling on her mother’s purse strap. “I wanna stay at home with you.”
“Not now Samantha,” Pamela said dismissively, pushing her daughter out of the way so she could continue her conversation.
Sam crossed her arms, her bottom lip jutted out into a pout. “Fine,” she said angrily. She stomped into the classroom and sat down on one of the carpet squares that were forming a circle.
“Watch out!” A boy cried from behind her. Something hard hit her in the back of her head, causing spots to form in front of her eyes. She vaguely heard someone asking her if she was all right.
“Gee, I’m sorwy.” Came that same boy again. “I did tell ya to watch out.”
Sam looked up at the black haired, blue-eyed boy and shook her head. “It hurts,” she muttered.
“I said I was sorwy,” he reminded her, sitting down next to her. He stuck out his hand abruptly. “I’m Danny.”
Sam looked at him for a moment, still rubbing the back of her head. Her pigtails were now lopsided. Finally, she grabbed his hand and shook it. “Sammy.”
“Can I call ya Sam?” he asked.
Sam nodded uncertainly. “I guess.”
“Great!” Danny exclaimed, leaping up off the ground. “Come on Sam I want ya ta meet Tucker. It was his Frisbee that hit your head.”
Sam stared at the ground, where a shiny new Frisbee lay. She fingered it nervously. “Can I play too?”
