I play in the dirt

Over the past few days I have been working nonstop in my garden. What was once pure clay soil is now in much much better shape. Breaking ground last year was back breaking, but this year was soooooo much easier! By this time next year, it will be even better. I added a crap load of compost this time around before planting everything. The compost also doubles as a mulch, so the bed looks great. Last year I didn't have much of a variety growing, but this year I have oodles of lovely plants. I even tried my hand at companion planting, which I have been reading about. I cannot wait to start eating from the yard again. C'mon, June!

Last year I grew:
Jalapenos
Sequoia Strawberries
Cucumbers
Zucchini
Beefsteak Tomatoes
Sweet Basil
Cilantro
Oregano
Lavender
Wild Flowers

This year I have:
Mr. Stripey Heirloom Tomatoes
Golden Jubilee Tomatoes
Cherry Tomatoes
Jalapenos
Cucumbers
Ichiban Eggplant
Zucchini
Sweet Bell Peppers
Mesclun
Simpson Elite Lettuce
Garlic
Sequoia Strawberries (from last year)
Sweet Basil
Spearmint
Chives
Tarragon
Cilantro
Oregano
Marigolds
Lavender (from last year)
Wild Flowers (from last year)

I built my own tomato trellis this afternoon. I learned from last year's horrors that tomato cages are absolute garbage. Anyone want any tomato cages?

Eventually I would like to build a succulent planter, but that requires another trip to the store. I am hoping to keep it together long enough throughout the year to be able to have a winter garden as well. Nik and I really want to grow some cauliflower and broccoli. Oh, and some brussels sprouts, too. Yum.
