Title: The Last Thing
Disclaimer: Not mine.
A/N: Another one for
hawaii_5_0_100 , using the prompt “miracle.” This continues my drabble series, and I’m inclined to think that this may be the last one, but my muses may surprise me. Much thanks to
geminigrl11 for the beta.

The last thing Danny says to Steve is: “It’ll be miracle if we all get out of this in one piece.”
Steve doesn’t even roll his eyes; they hardly have the time. This bust is happening, and this bust is happening now, and no matter what objections Danny raises, he knows that much is true. Steve is all business, and he explains in plain terms how Danny needs to take Kono to the back and block the exit while Steve and Chin flush the suspects out.
The last thing Danny thinks before the gunfire stops is: “Damn it, of all the times to be right.” Because with four perps carrying four guns and a frenetic gunfight to use said guns, someone getting shot is one of those inevitable things. Like skin cancer and shark attacks. Of course, Danny had counted on the bullet proof vest to be of some kind of help, but apparently if this whole thing is going to hell, it might as well travel all the way through Dante’s freakin’ seven levels just because.
The last thing Danny hears before he passes out is: “I’ve got you, Danno. You’re going to be okay.” Steve’s the kind of moron who means all the BS he spews, but he’s full of more crap than usual today, because Danny’s got a hole in his side and he’s bleeding like a stuck pig and he’s cold and he’s hot and he wants to rage against it but can’t even make his mouth form words anymore. And Kono’s got tears on her cheeks as she works, and Chin looks away as he manhandles a suspect in the opposite direction, and Steve is staring at him with a fear Danny almost doesn’t recognize right before Danny passes out.
When he’s unconscious, there’s no beginning and end, and the last thing is the first thing and everything in between. Danny remembers Grace being born, her first angry cry. Rachel on their wedding day, the flutter of his heart when they were pronounced husband and wife. Stepping off the plane in Hawaii, squinting up at the eternal sunshine and wondering how the hell this could be his home. Kono and her love taps and Chin and his steady police work and Steve saying there’s no one else to do this job. And Danny can’t change these things, won’t change these things, even for the bullet in his side.
Getting shot sucks, but recovering bites worse, and it takes all his willpower to smile when Grace visits. Steve’s there, through it all, smiling so much that Danny wants to shoot him. But when Danny’s spent after PT, Steve helps him wordlessly into the bed, and if the pain leaves Danny bent and crying, neither of them say anything about it.
The last thing Danny thinks before he checks out of the hospital is: nothing about this is a miracle, it’s just how this team thing works, and Danny might just be okay with that after all.
