“You do remember,” Helen continued, “that the only reason you can run now is because of me.”
Stephen flinched when she reached out, but he didn’t pull away when her fingers traced his arm.
“I mean, here you are,” she cooed. “No scratches; no bruises. Perfectly whole because of me.”
Stephen’s anger flared. “After you lied to me and put me in danger on purpose.”
She pulled away, her expression hardening. “We’re at an impasse, then.”
Stephen lifted his chin. He wouldn’t back down now.
“Because you want to leave,” she said. “And there’s no way I’m letting that happen.”
