I despise small talk, so I answer honestly to make people regret asking.
Conversation I had today at Best Buy:
Cashier: You doing anything fun for the holiday? Going to see the fireworks?
Me: I *HATE* the Fourth of July, and I especially hate fireworks.
Cashier: Oh, well are you gonna have some beers with friends?
Me: I can't drink, I'm allergic to alcohol. It makes me ill. It also smells like someone puked in a bag and let it rot for three weeks.
Cashier: Oh, uh... So, you doin' anything else fun instead?
Me: Yes, but it has nothing to do with this shitty holiday.
Cashier: (Gave up at this point.)
