There's always so much uproar against self-insert characters, usually referred to as Mary Sues. But self-insert characters are a dime a dozen in fiction. Take any random book by any random white male author, and odds are pretty good that the protagonist is just as boring and white and male as its boring, white male author, but with like magic powers, a great destiny, or kung fu or something along those lines.
It's "funny" how self-insert characters are only considered a problem when the author is anyone other than a boring white man.
