Wretched hive of scum and villainy
I love the description of the Orion home world in this Star Trek novel I'm reading ("Silent Weapons" by David Mack), because of course it's still considered the galactic hive of scum and villainy by most of the galaxy, but the description of the place describes a culture much like the twentieth century United States, but using laws and law enforcement to keep most of the advanced technology of the rest of the galaxy off of the planet. The most high tech thing on Orion so far in the book is the bank, using tritanium alloy, force fields, transporter blocking tech, and sensor scattering fields. Seems only the wealthy Orions get the high tech gadgets from off world.
But yeah, I love it because this wretched hive of scum and villainy is basically capitalism, and Mack is not at all subtle about being on the side of the federation's communist utopia. He doesn't go overboard on it either, which is even better. But yeah, there's occasional things like slums and poverty being sarcastically called the price of personal liberty, it's great. :)
