France and discrimination

I don't understand why the French government is trying to ban headscarves. After all, quite apart from it being discriminatory against Muslims, what about all the nuns, women who just like scarves, and other non-Muslims the law will target? I thought of this point because I, a white pagan, got confused once as being a Muslim by some idiot who couldn't tell the difference between a cloak and a chador or hijab or whatnot. (Since to most Americans, it's ALL "burqa" to them.) Luckily, I didn't get any hate crime done against me when the idiot made his mistake. (He asked "You a Muslim?" belligerently. I gave him a scathing look and said witheringly, "It's a CLOAK, you idiot! I'm a PAGAN." Which got rid of him.) But it could have. Just because Americans are THAT fucking stupid. And, it seems the French government is equally stupid.
