Summary: “Alright Nath,” John said, “this is it, just like we practiced, big breath and…”

The dining room was decorated with white and blue happy first birthday streamers and balloons, there was a mountain of gifts stacked in front of the basement door (which John had put there on purpose because he was tired of seeing the basement), and a gaggle of guests standing in a circle around Nathan who had just learned to stand up by himself.
Sam had been there since eight that morning so John could bake the cake and Rodney could decorate the dining room. Jack was there as well as Cam, Daniel, Vala and Teal’c. Walter Harriman had surprised them all by showing up; Landry had sent them a message and a gift telling them he regretted not being able to get away.
Ronon had shown up with the mystery woman, she had short reddish hair and full lips; she was slightly heavier set and only came to Ronon’s shoulder. Ronon had introduced her as Karen and he told her that John and Rodney were practically his brothers and that made Nathan practically his nephew. His eyes were bright and shining and he was smiling a lot more than he usually did; the sight made John and Rodney’s hearts light, they had been worried about their friend.
Teyla and Torren came to Earth for the occasion. Teyla said Kanaan was visiting his family and couldn’t make it.
Since there was a non SGC person in their midst, for the duration of the party, Teyla was from Pennsylvania and Vala was from Detroit. Ronon’s forged papers had him hailing from Iowa and they let Teal’c be from California.
Jeanie, Caleb and Madison had come in, and Jeanie was sporting a plump eight month belly. Ronon, for whatever reason, went completely mad over the pregnant belly making both Jeanie and Karen giggle.
John had never considered himself a baker. He could cook but baking was an entirely different matter, so he was surprised that the cake turned out as good as it did.
He decided to make one of those fun-fetti cakes because there wasn’t a person alive that didn’t think those were good. He also made cupcakes for the kids and a smaller version of the birthday cake just for Nathan to mess in.
There were fruit, veggie and meat trays sitting on the dining room table and Torren was running around with a cube of cheese in one hand and a piece of broccoli in the other.
John had pre-prepared the area around Nathan’s highchair for the birthday mess by putting painters’ tarps on the floor and the wall behind the chair.
John smiled when he heard a wave of cheers from the dining room followed quickly by a collective “awww,” indicating that Nathan had just done his standing trick again and had fallen promptly after.
“Alright guys, we’re just about ready, go wrangle the kids out of the backyard,” John said and Teyla and Jeanie slipped out through the sliding doors.
Cam had volunteered himself for video camera duty and Sam had snatched the digital off the erecta-roomba that had been stashed in the closet. Vala, Karen and Teyla each grabbed a tray and took them into the kitchen to make room for the cake on the table.
Rodney picked Nathan up and sat him snuggly on his hip where he flapped wildly as John carried the birthday cake into the dining room. Everyone began singing the birthday song.
John sat the cake on the table then went to stand with Rodney, Nathan between them.
“Alright Nath,” John said, “this is it, just like we practiced, big breath and…”
Nathan blew, which was really more of a deep sigh, and the flame flickered, John gave a puff of air, the candle went out and Nathan clapped. “Aaaay,” he cheered
Rodney put Nathan in the highchair and snapped the tray in place. John made sure Cam was in the right place with the camera focused on Nathan, and then he put the little cake on the tray. Everyone laughed and clapped as Nathan’s hand smacked down into the center of the icing, spraying everyone with tiny white specks.
The mauling of the cake lasted approximately fifteen minutes, after which the entire thing went tumbling to the floor.
“Guess he’s done with that,” Ronon said.
Rodney and Nathan disappeared upstairs for awhile and when they came back down, Rodney had on a different shirt and Nathan had wet hair.
“You gave him a bath in the middle of his birthday party?” John asked.
“Did you see him? He was a mess, if I didn’t get that icing out of his hair while it was still wet we were going to have a screaming child later.”
“Okay, well its present time now,” John said and stole Nathan from Rodney and plopped down on the floor with him.
Rodney followed John and positioned himself beside the mountain of gifts. He plucked a small one off the top and said “To Nathan from aunt Vala, it’s spelled with an a not an o n.a.t.h.A.n.” and handed the gift to John.
John helped Nathan with the paper at first, but once Nathan realized this was all about ripping he didn’t need any more help.
Rodney looked at the crowd of onlookers. “He’s destructive, just like his dad. He’s gonna want to blow things up when he gets older.”
“Oh, look at those,” John said unbelievably as he looked at a pair of shiny leather boots.
“I got those in a village on-” Vala began.
Daniel clapped his hand over her mouth and smiled. “They weren’t that expensive either,” he said as if he had been there.
“To Nathan from uncle Jack,” Rodney said.
Nathan tore the paper not caring what was beneath it.
“Aw, a little baseball glove,” John said and held it up.
“I wanted to get him a little hockey stick, but they didn’t make ‘em small enough,” Jack said and shrugged.
“Thanks General,” John said.
“To Nathan… really, why do people feel the need to write who the gift is to on a birthday gift? Unless there are twins there’s only one person getting gifts,” Rodney complained.
“Rodney, just say who it’s from then,” John said.
“From Teyla.”
Nathan annihilated the paper.
“Bantos rods? This young?” John asked.
“His training may begin once he has gained full control over his mobility and balance. Torren started bantos training at eighteen months,” Teyla explained.
“Wow, those kids at daycare better watch out,” Cam stated jokingly.
The gifts were piled on the table one by one until there were none left. That didn’t bother Nathan in the least, he continued ripping the already shredding paper, and Madison and Torren joined in the fun.
The mess was cleaned up, the dishes were washed, and most of the guests had left, all that were left were Jeanie’s family, Sam, Ronon and his girlfriend.
“So Jeanie,” John said from his place on the floor in front of the couch between Rodney’s knees, “what are we expecting? A niece or a nephew?”
“We’ve decided to let it be a surprise,” Kaleb said.
“We were actually going to ask you if you wouldn’t mind letting us use some of Nathan’s old things,” Jeanie said. “Like the swing and the jumper.”
John looked around at Rodney and Rodney looked over at Jeanie. “Actually Jeanie, John and I were planning on having another baby.”
“Really?” Jeanie asked, “Without my assistance this time right.”
John chuckled. “Yeah, we can’t go into details right now but we won’t be needing you this time around. No offence.”
“Oh believe me, none taken. Handing Nathan over to you guys was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I don’t regret it, not in the least. You guys have done an amazing job with him, but I don’t think that’s something I can do again.”
“It took her awhile to get over it,” Kaleb said.
Jeanie shot him a glare, “But I was happy to do it. Aside from having Maddie, giving you guys a family was probably the most rewarding thing I’ve done in my life.”
“Well thank you, we do appreciate it,” John said.
It was quiet for a moment, then Jeanie asked, “So what agency are you guys going through?”
“Huh?” John asked.
“Adoption agency. Which are you using?”
John and Rodney’s eyes both fell on Karen for an instant before Rodney spoke.
“We uh- we can’t go into that right now.”
“Don’t worry,” Ronon’s deep voice filled the silence; everyone looked over and saw him looking at Karen who was perched on his lap, “they stay pretty private until they get to know you. It’s a defense mechanism that’s been engrained in both of them… for good reason.”
“It’s okay, I understand,” she said and looked at her watch. “Ronon we should probably get going if we’re going to make our reservations.”
She climbed down off Ronon’s lap and he got up.
“Meeting her parents,” he said as he walked over to John and Rodney.
John and Rodney each hugged him, congratulated him on his relationship and reminded him not to be a stranger.
Ronon shook Kaleb’s hand and hugged Jeanie, patting her belly affectionately and they left.
“She was nice,” Jeanie said after a few minutes.
“Soft spoken,” Rodney stated.
“Ronon’ll eat her for lunch,” John added.
“I don’t know,” Kaleb said, “she seemed to have a calming effect on Ronon.”
“I don’t think I’ve ever heard Calm and Ronon in the same sentence,” Rodney said lightly.
“Well, he’s down for the count,” Sam said as she came downstairs.
“Thanks for your help today Sam,” John offered.
“No problem. I’m always looking for an excuse to spend time with my little guy.”
“I don’t think there’s ever been a baby loved more than Nathan is,” Jeanie said. “He’s got two wonderful fathers and a ton of really good friends.” She looked at John and Rodney, “you guys have done so good with him, I couldn’t have done better myself.”

“Do you think I should be naked?” John asked as Rodney pulled the night stand out from the wall.
“It didn’t say you had to be,” Rodney replied.
“No, but I just don’t want to take any chances of something weird happening.”
“Be naked if it makes you feel better, but I don’t think it’s going to make a difference. Will you be comfortable lying naked for an hour?”
John sighed. “I forgot about that part.”
“Maybe just, keep your boxers on.”
“Yeah, that’s a good idea,” John said and stripped to his boxers.
They’d taken Nathan to daycare that morning even though neither of them were going to work because they wanted to make sure the process wasn’t interrupted.
They’d asked Carson to come to Earth for the procedure to be on hand if anything did go wrong, and to take John’s blood since John couldn’t take his own and Rodney wasn’t going to stick him with a needle.
“You remember Jack’s rules right?” Carson asked.
“Yes doc,” John huffed.
“John, it’s important that you remember them, they’re for your own safety.”
“I know.”
“So…”
John sighed, “Once the pregnancy progresses to the point that I’m showing, I am not to leave the house, and the curtains must be drawn at all times. I must only go to either you or Dr. Lam no matter what is wrong. I must follow your and Dr. Lam’s instructions to the letter when they are given. I will only be allowed to go off world until my fifth month and only if missions continue to be light and safe and if my belly doesn’t get to big for me to fit through the gate-”
“I think he was kidding about that part,” Carson said.
“And Rodney is not to bring home anything from work that may adversely affect a developing fetus, although that’s more a rule for Rodney, not me.”
“Alright, alright. The rest of the rules are just your basic care for a growing child rules. Now give me your arm.”
“Make sure you don’t stick yourself Carson, I want John getting pregnant not you,” Rodney said as he watched from across the room.
“I’ve been drawing blood for some time now Rodney; I think I know what I’m doing.”
John hissed as the needle pierced his skin. Carson pressed the vial into the tube and John’s blood began filling it.
“Alright,” Carson said and handed John the open vial, “The rest is up to you. I’ll be downstairs if you need me.”
Rodney went over to John where he sat on the edge of the bed looking down at the vial of blood. He took John’s head in his hands and lifted his face to his. He lightly kissed his lips.
“This is it,” he whispered.
John nodded. “Yep,”
“It’s going to be alright John.”
“I know, I’m just a little nervous.”
“That’s fine, I’m nervous too. But I’ll be right here; I’m not leaving this room until you get finished.”
“Okay.” John whispered. He kissed Rodney again and touched the device. The small clear vial rose out of the top and John lifted it out, he poured some of his blood into it and handed the rest to Rodney. He put the small vial back and pressed it in. The machine began to hum and John lay down.
“You did set it for single right?” he asked.
“Yes,” Rodney replied.
“Good.” John took another deep breath and on the exhale orange lights began covering his body in overlapping crisscrossing patterns.
“Does it hurt?” Rodney asked.
“No, but I feel all tingly inside.”
