Danny sat on the couch and looked at the little dolphin Grace had brought with her. This was his weekend, but really, it was Grace’s life so even his weekends were really her weekends. And it was just one night, he could survive. At least he still had tomorrow… as long as no idiotic psychopath decided to ruin it for him. That had happened so often since he joined five-0. At least Grace was understanding about it, but Danny couldn’t help but remember just last year when his baby girl had turned down an invitation to a birthday sleep over, saying “I can’t, I’m going to my daddy’s.” Now here he was, sitting on the couch at seven thirty at night on a Saturday. He’d had all day with her, so he wasn’t really complaining, but he’d planned on renting movies and ordering pizza and making caramel popcorn balls, and sitting up all night, until Grace fell asleep leaning on Danny’s arm.
Eventually, he put the dolphin on the end table and got up. He was hungry, but he didn’t want to order pizza without Grace, so he’d settle for a simple ham sandwich with pickles on the side. He had everything set out and was getting ready to make his meal when there was a soft knock on the door. He sighed and turned away from his sandwich stuff. This always happened; undoubtedly, his bread would have crunchy edges by the time he got back to it.
“Steve,” he said, when he opened the door.
Steve just tipped his head toward the car and Danny looked past him, his heart leaping as he saw Grace getting out of the truck.
“Daddy,” she said as she hurried to the house.
“What are you doing here?” Danny asked as he squatted to her level, hoping that her answer was that she missed him so much that she had to come home.
“I forgot something,” she said instead and threw her arms around Danny’s neck. “I’m sorry I forgot to give you a hug.”
“Oh, monkey,” Danny said as he wrapped his arms around the little girl. “I love you.”
“Love you too, Danno,” she replied and turned back to Steve. “You can take me back now,” she told him. “See you tomorrow daddy,” she called as she ran back to the truck.
Steve looked at Danny and shrugged. “She called me, said she needed to see you and asked if I could pick her up. I got the whole story on the way here. You’ve got a special little girl there, Danno.”
“I know,” Danny agreed. “Hey, after you drop her back off, you wanna come by and we can get some pizza and beer? I’m famished, and suddenly, ham’s not going to cut it.”
Steve smiled and nodded. “See you in a few minutes.”
Danny waved them off and then went back into the kitchen. His bread wasn’t hard, so he put it back in the bag, put the rest of the food away and grabbed his phone, dialing the number for the pizza place around the block.
