Title: Trouble Author: Florence A. Watson Length: 191 words Written for: Brigit's Flame September 2014 Challenge (Week One) Prompt: "Ya Got Trouble" from musical The Music Man
The kitten scratched Jimmy on the first day. “He just wanted to play,”said Mum to the practice nurse who was dressing the deep gash on Jimmy’s cheek. “He’s only two, after all, and didn’t know not to pull Fluffy’s tail.” The next day, while exploring the side of the bathtub, Fluffy fell into the water, and this time scratched Jimmy in a little more ‘delicate’ place as he scrambled out. The emergency room nurse suggested making sure Jimmy didn’t take Fluffy into the bathtub again. That night there was a loud cry when Jimmy stepped on the kitten’s tail as he got out of bed to use the toilet. “Bad kitty!” exclaimed Mum, as she shut him out of Jimmy’s bedroom to sooth her sobbing toddler and put a bandage on the claw marks in his foot. On Wednesday, Jimmy sifted through the litter-tray, getting runny cat faeces all over him. Mum decided to dispense with the litter and put the kitten out in the garden for the night. Fluffy mewed pitifully for a while; it was cold and wet. Shivering, she hid under the next door neighbour’s back porch, coming out the next morning when the old woman was hanging out the washing. She saw the kitten out of the corner of her eye and ‘ignored’ her until she approached. Then, swiftly, she bent and scooped up the bedraggled hungry mite and cuddled her, stroking her gently, before taking her inside. “Now where did you come from, little trouble? You can’t be more than 6 weeks old - too young to be away from your mum.”
