Is there any truth to the saying: keep your friends close, and your enemies closer? Do you have enemies? Do you have more friends than enemies?

I believe there may be some truth to it. I practise a policy, where I can, of placing and keeping any potential enemies in my debt. It's very hard to move against someone when you owe them anything significant - at least, if you have any honour at all. That qualifies as "closer", in a way.

Of course I have enemies. In my line of business, it is extremely hard not to alienate anybody, and still turn a profit. The Velvets, for instance, have a distinct grudge against me, as does the Earl, and I suspect Croup, Vandemar and Islington would be only too happy to ensure my painful death, were they ever to return.

I have... friends. As to whether I have more true friends than enemies, I wouldn't like to say. There are a few - a very few, and most of them here - who I would trust not to turn against me, whatever inducements they might be offered to do so. And as that is how I define friends, it is very possible that they number less than my enemies.
