How do you view commitment?

That depends on what kind of commitment you mean, although I suppose it all comes to the same in the end.

Commitment, whether to a person, a cause, an obligation, or anything else, can be a fine thing. It can also be unwise and possibly dangerous. This depends on the circumstances.

If one commits to a person, there is the risk that the commitment will not be returned to the extent to which it is given. To a cause, and the cause may be unworthy or may disappoint you in failing to achieve its ends. To an obligation, and you risk the recipient taking advantage and asking an unwelcome price.

The only thing to which I have ever honoured any commitment was to an obligation. And the most significant of those was not my choice - I was indebted before I even knew. But once I did, I would not have broken the obligation, and my honour, even given the choice to do so.

In the end, commitment is an individual choice, for each of us. Whether to commit to anything, and what to commit to if we do. But each of us should be aware of the pitfalls, before making that choice.
