Curious

Now, I know I have a few musicians and DJs (real ones) on my Flist and a few people who have very strong opinions on what music they like and what they don't.

I've, personally, no musical talent, can't play an instrument and can't sing, although it would be nice I just a) can't be arsed learning an instrument or finding out if I could sing if I had lessons and b) have no creative musical juices but I do love listening to music, singing along and dancing around to it.  Live and recorded.

I enjoy music on different levels for different reasons.  I can thoroughly enjoy a pop song with a catchy tune and some repetitive lyrics, I also love a beautiful ballad with touching lyrics, sometimes I'll holler along with some country music, there's a very special place in my heart for a pounding beat&some samples with great dancing potential then I'll happily adore the artistry of electronic geekery of the highest order, shock horror, sometimes I even like a band just because they put on a good show.  Sometimes I've no idea why I like something and I sometimes don't particularly care, I don't have to dissect a track to give it any value.   I like it cos I like it.  Maybe it just makes me want to dance.  That does not mean I don't recognise talent and quality when I hear it.  I can also appreciate that what floats my boat doesn't necessarily float another person's and vice versa without automatically deciding I don't like something therefore it is shit.

I have to admit I've gone through a slump in seeking out and buying new music recently which will right itself in due course, I think I've had overload of distorted vocal tracks that can be virtually indistinguishable from one band to another and have gone back to the security blanket of songs with audible lyrics and tunes I can hum in my head.  Laziness yes.

Where am I going with this, well I'm not really sure.  Waffle waffle waffle.  Do you think it's a very different experience listening to a track depending on whether you're a musician, DJ or a punter?  Can/do musicians & DJs generally listen to a track without mentally noting what's "wrong" with it and what could be improved?  I'm not saying I don't sometimes listen to music and think "oh I'd have loved that if the vocals had been clearer or if there had been no cheesy sample etc" but generally I just accept how the artist has put the track together and take from it what I will.  How come some people are so staunchly "well, that's shite" and others are more "well it's no for me, doesn't mean it's bad" I guess I think a lot of people are just too judgemental/opinionated.  What do youse think?
