(hurrah! I am finished with midterms... and you know what that means... A rewatch!)
2x07 - “The Idiot’s Lantern”
Grade: A-
This could still be New York... This looks very New York to me, a London-y New York, mind...
The Monster of the Week is a bit over the top and there isn’t a lot of character growth or exploration, but I don’t really care because this episode is tons of fun. It’s the 1950s! Elizabeth II’s coronation! The Doctor slicking his hair back! Rose wearing adorable 50s fashion! I love it.
The Wire is actually a bit creepy. Having your TV talk at you is kind of scary. The whole “HUUUNGRRRY” thing makes me laugh, but I dunno. I just feel like this episode is kind of all about cheesiness and so the Wire kind of fits right into that. The faceless people are supremely creepy too. I love it.
I like the fact that Rose and the Doctor find themselves in this situation while trying to go see Elvis in New York. And the Doctor has a scooter! With a matching pink helmet for Rose! Seriously, I just love how much fun they have together, with the universe at their fingertips.
The Doctor [impersonating Elvis]: You going my way, doll?
Rose: Is there any other way to go Daddy-o? Straight from the fridge, man!
Rose is pretty great in this episode too. She’s the first one to notice that something isn’t quite right. There are too many TV aerials, and Rose picks up on that. And then Rose notices that something is weird with the TV, so she goes off to investigate Magpie Electricals. Rose is more and more coming into her own.
The Doctor has faith in Rose. Unlike in “The Girl in the Fireplace”, the Doctor isn’t abandoning her in some distant time on a malfunctioning space ship. But he does trust her to be ok when he has to go running off after the police.
The Doctor is great in this episode too. I love that moment when he sees faceless!Rose. I love slightly emo and righteously angry Doctor.
The Doctor: They did what?
Bishop: I'm sorry?
The Doctor: They left her where?
Bishop: Just... in the street.
The Doctor: The street. They left her in the street. They took her face, and just chucked her out and left her in the street. And as a result, that makes things... simple. Very very simple. Do you know why?
Bishop: No.
The Doctor: Because now, Detective Inspector Bishop, there is now power on this earth that can stop me!
There’s also this heart breaking face that the Doctor has when he sees Rose’s face in the TV.
The Doctor also has a lot of fun moments.
Bishop: Start from the beginning. Tell me everything you know.
The Doctor: Well, for starters, I know... you can't wrap your hand round your elbow and make your fingers meet.
and
The Doctor: "It's never too late", as a wise person once said. Kylie I think.
The Doctor listens to Kylie Minogue! Of course he does.
Let’s not forget the fact that the Doctor licks something again. Oh Ten. I love you.
I love it when the Doctor MacGyevers a bunch of stuff together to save the day. And his climb up the tower was epic. That throwaway line where the guard read his psychic paper and assumed he was the King of Belgium was highly amusing too.
Finally, the Doctor/Rose moments in this episode and adorable and plentiful. Aside from the aforementioned scooter of cuteness and the Doctor’s anger over Rose being abandoned, the Doctor and Rose are adorable when they go investigating at Tommy’s house.
The Doctor and Rose: Hi!
The little look they exchange in this scene is hilarious.
Rose: 'Scuse me Mr Connolly, hang on a minute. Union Jacks?
Eddie: Yes, that's right, isn't it?
Rose: That's the Union Flag. It's the Union Jack only when it's flown at sea.
Eddie: Oh. Oh, I'm sorry. I... I do apologise.
Rose: Well, don't get it wrong again. There's a good man, now get to it!
The Doctor: Right then! Nice and comfy, at Her Majesty's Leisure.
[to Rose]
The Doctor: Union Flag?
Rose: Mum went out with a sailor.
The Doctor: Oh, I bet she did.
And finally, their reunion is epic. They way that their faces light up when they see each other is just makes me grin, as does the way that they just hug each other like they’re holding on to each other for dear life.
As a final picture, let’s enjoy the Doctor and Rose celebrating the coronation!
