"sometimes ... you have to score goals"

AKA: The Obligatory World Cup Post
- with thanks to Harry Kewell for the above quote.

Maybe it was the accumulation of a quite few nights of WorldCupInsomnia™, but after experiencing the lows (Kalac) and highs (Moore) and lows (damn Kalac) and highs (Kewell) of the Australia v Croatia match, I almost found myself in tears after seeing the photo on the above right in the hours following. But let's face it - staying up late and/or getting up early has already made me vulnerable to uncontrollable feelings of patriotism, when the crowds in Germany sing our national anthem so proudly the words are audible through my tv speakers. I always intended to follow the Socceroos, and don't consider myself to be jumping on any bandwagons since football has been an important part of my (sport-supporting) life thanks to being 50% British. I knew I'd cheer when things went well, but I never expected to get so passionate about these green and gold guys to be blinking away tears during their World Cup campaign. In fact, I even joked that I had three teams competing - Australia, England and the Netherlands - but I honestly didn't see the Socceroos progressing past the group stages. I'll continue to be pessimisticrealistic about our chances against Italy, but if we can move past them I think we're a good chance against either Switzerland or Ukraine. Meanwhile, if England and Holland win their matches they have to play each other so my loyalties will be divided in that match.

And in other news... According to excellently-worded reports in NW magazine, Hollywood stars get more and more talented every day:
"Spiderman 3 star Tobey Maguire is expecting his first child with long time girlfriend Jennifer Meyer." Kinda like Arnold Schwarzenegger in Junior... Let me shake hands with the man who would be Mom.
