OK, folks.
It's coming up on a time when I will no longer have to deny myself the pleasure of reading for fun.
And I want to read good books.
So please recommend some to me.
Most of my friends know what I've liked, but since this is a public post, I'll include a short list of some of the things I've particularly enjoyed, off the top of my head, in the past 5 years or so.
-Marisha Pessl, Special Topics in Calamity Physics
-Michael Chabon, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (though NOT The Yiddish Policeman's Union... *shudder*)
-Jeffrey Eugenides, Middlesex
-Neal Stephenson, The Baroque Cycle
-Margaret Atwood, pretty much anything
-John Steinbeck, East of Eden
-Audrey Niffenegger, The Time Traveler's Wife
-Christopher Priest, The Prestige
-Susanna Clarke, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell
-Michel Faber, The Crimson Petal and the White
-Zadie Smith, On Beauty
-Pat Barker, Regeneration trilogy
-David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas
-Evelyn Waugh, Brideshead Revisited
Any thoughts apart from Oscar Wao, which, no matter how much I am told is brilliant, I just cannot make myself be excited about reading.
Or, you know, tell me me to get my head out of my ass and read Oscar Wao.
