oscar noms

OK, so I'm terribly out of the movie loop and haven't seen nearly as many of the nominated films this year as I'd have liked, but I still have to post the annual Oscar nom list. My feelings in italics after each category. Some categories skipped for boringness or lack of caring.

I was just all-around confused by the nominees. I mean, I thought I was doing a good job of seeing a bunch of movies that would be nominated...then all the movies that I thought would sweep hardly showed up. Perplexing. Also, I heard from several good sources that The Curious Case of Benjamin Button sucked, so I'm not sure why it's the leading nominee.

My comments:
Performance by an actor in a leading role
I have only seen Milk, but I understand Mickey Rourke is pretty much a shoe-in. Yawn.

Performance by an actor in a supporting role
Michael Shannon is amazing in Revolutionary Road. I'm totally behind him. But I think Heath Ledger will and probably should win, and that's fine. Dani and I are going to start a "Reanimate Heath Ledger with CGI in the Event He Wins the Oscar" group on Facebook. We discussed it today at lunch.

Performance by an actress in a leading role
Agreed, anyone but Saint Angelina. Is it really possible that Kate Winslet hasn't won an Oscar?!? I guess I should see The Reader. Having only seen two of these, I vote Anne Hathaway.

Performance by an actress in a supporting role
I love Amy Adams, but I didn't think she did anything all that special in Doubt. I guess I'll vote Penelope Cruz in this category. She was good.

Best animated feature film of the year
DUH duh duh duh.

Achievement in directing
Yawn. No opinion.

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original score)
Definitely want this one to go to A. R. Rahman, if for no other reason than the fact that he writes the scores for sooooo many Bollywood films, has done so since the 1970s, and has written some of the catchiest songs I've ever heard. He's like India's Mozart (if Mozart wrote prolifically for film) and it would be nice for him to be acknowledged in the U.S. And I do like the Slumdog single a lot.

Best motion picture of the year
I've only seen two of these. I like both of them (Milk and Slumdog) but I'm slightly underwhelmed. I guess I'll have to see the others.

Aaaaaand I'm neglecting the other two because I'm lazy. My thoughts!
And my final thought is that we, too, are REALLY sad you won't be here for Oscars viewing.
It just won't be the same. :-(

As usual, I've only seen one movie on this list: WALL-E.

Figures.
