you know it's time for an oscar fashion post

Feb 25, 2008 10:39

This might be the longest Oscar fashion post ever, which is weird because mostly I thought the fashion (like the ceremony) was kinda lame and mostly yawn-ful. That said, here we go.

Wait, turns out I'm not done.

Here's the non-fashion related opinions.

Best Speech (Emotion)
Hands down Marion Cotillard who was so sweet and genuine and crying and made me cry, too. And I love that she said the director "rocked [her] life." Yay!

Best Speech (Eloquence)
Daniel Day-Lewis, who is always well-spoken and didn't disappoint last night. Anyone who starts off kneeling to Helen Mirren in a mock-knighting ceremony and then thanks the academy for "whacking me with the handsomest bludgeon in town" gets an A+ in my book.

(Plus, this is what he said when asked why he kissed George Clooney on his way up to the stage: "I had to kiss someone. I had kissed my wife, so in the interest of parity, I had to kiss George."

Best Speech (Humor)
Tilda Swinton who was genuine and pleased and managed to make fun of George Clooney and his Batsuit's rubber nipples all in 30 seconds or so.

Best Speech (I'm Glad We Got to Hear It)
When Jon Stewart invited Best Song co-winner Marketa Irglova back out on stage after she'd been played off without getting a chance to talk.

Best Host Redemption
Jon Stewart, who (although we all liked him hosting last time) didn't go over well a few years ago, and is now being lauded for his hosting last night. And he did have some very funny bits. There were a lot of them. Please contribute your own below. I liked:
--the joke about watching Lawrence of Arabia on his iPhone
--his appreciation of Atonement, the best movie about Yom Kippur
--Gaydolf Titler
--"Even Norbit got a nomination, which I think is great. Too often the Academy ignores movies that aren't good."
--his "translation" of Javier Bardem's Spanish acceptance speech ("I believe he told his mother where the library was.")
--"In case you're wondering what we do in the commercial breaks, we sit here making catty remarks about the outfits you're wearing at home."

Best Upcoming Project Suggested by Us in the Room
A biopic of the honorary Oscar winner last night, production designer Robert Boyle, to star either Philip Seymour Hoffman or Viggo Mortensen (both of whom seemed to be very attentively studying Boyle's mannerisms at the podium). This film will be directed by Robert Rodriguez and will be called "El Production Designer: The Adventures of Art Direction Boy in Tinseltown." We were punchy.

Conversation I Most Want to Be a Part Of

That would be Cate Blanchett and Johnny Depp talking with each other.

hahahaha Renee Zelleweger is a hobag. I love that she looks constipated in EVERY photo. sourpuss!

I was underwhelmed by the fashion last night. My top three were Cate Blanchett, Helen Mirren, and Marion Cotillard, the only three women who seemed to care much about looking interesting and good.

I really want to see La Vie en Rose now.

He definitely did.

I remember he had some serious illness at some point, but not the details of it.

also: Regarding Nicole kidman, I agree the dress was a snore. the necklace, on the other hand, MAMA WANTS. except I would probably hang it from a light fixture instead of wear it, but I love it.

What the hell, man, I cannot believe how different he looks. Maybe he had an eating disorder before? If so, way to break free, but waugh.
