This is actually a big part of Japanese youth culture, especially dealing with comics (aka manga in Japan). There are lots of comics with gay characters and androgynous characters, and it's not really seen as socially unacceptable.
Living a gay lifestyle... yeah. Unacceptable. But reading about it in comics or watching it on tv (aka, when it's just fantasy) is fine.
See... I remember some of what I learned in college!
