Bistro 45, Blockage and The Wrestler, Again

Last night I went to check out Bistro 45, the restaurant where Chef Damon Bruner has recently taken the helm. While everything I tasted was fresh and delicious, the menu still remains mostly unchanged since Damon’s arrival. Alas, no calamari salad, just the standard fried variety, but Damon still took wonderful care of us, loading us up with little tastes of this and that. The oven roasted Portabella mushroom appetizer with applewood bacon lardons and pistachio essence was the best dish of the night, although my pork chop with a ginger balsamic glaze was also really tasty. The space was comfortable and low key, but the thing I liked the most about Bistro 45 (besides Damon, of course) was the service. Attentive but unobtrusive. My waiter noticed that I had spilled a little coffee into my saucer and swiftly, without drawing attention to himself, replaced it. He didn’t pal around with me and tell me his name or interrupt to ask how everything is, he just silently, intuitively took care of things. (Does it say something about me that I don’t want to know names, I just want service?) The desserts were also amazing, particularly the chocolate soup (!) Anyway all in all a great meal and I’m really looking forward to returning in the new year to check out all the original and interesting dishes Chef Damon will be introducing over the next six months. Highly recommended.

Meanwhile I’m entering the last stretch of my latest tie-in project and I have to say it’s been rough going. I don’t think I’ve ever had such a tough time with a job like this before and I can’t really put my finger on why. Truth is, it probably has nothing to do with the job and everything to do with me. Regardless, I’m still on it, still shoveling away down here in the pulp mines.

Also, I’m going to see The Wrestler again over the weekend. Apologies to anyone waiting on the edge of their seat for my opinion, but my feelings about this movie are still too complex for the standard binary it sucks / it’s cool type review. In fact luchaninjakeith and I have been tossing around the idea of coauthoring a tag team style dissection at some point over the next couple of weeks. Of course, I really need to turn in my damn tie-in first…
