Entry #24
It’s been a long day, but I would be a terrible mother if I did not journal about your first winter holiday family gathering. As usual, we all met over at Mom and Dad’s house. Back when I was little, the family gathered at Grandma Leia and Grandpa Han’s place on Denon. After we lost them, the festivities were moved to Great Uncle Luke and Great Aunt Mara’s house on Ossus. Then a few years ago, Mara decided she’d had enough fun playing hostess and passed the baton on to Mom.
There’s really no set holiday that we celebrate; I guess that happens when your family continues to increase in size and cultures. We just pick a day in the winter when as many of us can get together as possible. Then we sit around eating too much food and exchanging presents. This year everyone was able to attend save Nik, who won’t be back from another mission for a couple of weeks. It was a good time to have the family get together since Gavin leaves for Denon next week. He’s going to go serve as the Jedi liaison to the Chief of State.
You got to meet some new people today, like Luke and Mara’s daughter Adannah and her husband Mikal, who came back to Ossus for the first time since Ben and Kenna celebrated the first lifeday of Kellen, their fourth and youngest child, eight or so months ago.
I’ve always loved getting together with my family, but it’s so much more fun now, especially this year. There was a time about ten or twelve years ago, before the next generation came into existence, where our get-togethers were just a little too quiet. Granted, anyone of us can cause enough ruckus on our own to not need any help, but there’s just something about having kids around that makes things more fun, even if it also makes them more stressful.
There were nineteen of us together today. That may not sound like a big number, but when you consider how small our family started out a couple of generations back, it’s kind of impressive.
You did very well with your first big family gathering. You didn’t cry while being passed around from relative to relative, only when you needed fed or were getting tired. Having all those family members around was great because I think it was the first time in a while that your father and I got to eat at the same time and not have to worry about who was going to inhale their meal so they could go back to holding you. It was so nice having all those extra sets of eager arms around.
We don’t take for granted the little time all of us get to spend together. We wish we could do it more often, but our schedules usually don’t work out that well. It probably won’t be till another year from now around this time before all of us get together under one roof again.
I can’t help but wonder what you’ll be like then. Will you be walking from person to person instead of being passed around? Will you be able to say anyone’s names? Will you take any interest in your presents?
I can’t wait to find out.
