Planet: tba Avg. ht/wt: 36' beak to tail, 28' flipper to flipper; 3 tons Sentience: yes Activity in space: minimal/none
Description:
Malwi are deeply thoughtful and philosophical creatures that communicate through telepathy. Their range is about two miles at their loudest, and there is an "echo effect", where other Malwi can relay the thoughts of one member to another along the way, almost like telephoning (it requires mutual consent, but most are content to do it freely). As sea-going creatures without hands, they never developed a need for buildings or architecture, rather designating certain formations or landmarks in the sea as gathering points for rituals or events.
Their concept of self is mostly based off of others, and they assist each other in individualizing themselves. Painting the head or the belly is common.
Most Malwi travel alone or in small family groups, but there are large pods that converge to learn or debate their lessons as they go. Until contacted by other species from other planets, they had no concept of the universe. It was judged hazardous and loaded with dangerous superstition for the longest time (and still is), as many of those encounters resulted in abductions for pan-galactic zoos. With the universe slowly starting to fall under fewer banners, sentient rights is trying to put a stop to their capture. Still, very few Malwi decide to accept invites off of their planet, save for a ambassadors or the braver adventurers. It takes a great deal of trust of their rides into space, and few are willing to trust that far.
Professor Umbr Shee is the most famous Malwi off-planet. She is a philosophy teacher at one of the top pan-galactic universities.
These creatures are omnivorous, combing the water with their heads tilted slightly down to allow their extended lower jaw to scoop up floating plants and tiny animals to eat. Their head is hollow bone and buoyant, giving them a swan-like look when they swim when not eating. They can cover 280 miles in 24 hours at their fastest.
