Looking for online mother of the bride dress resources, preferably from sites with decent return policies. My mom has gained some weight the past few years and she's really uncomfortable with her body right now. Shopping in brick and mortar stores has been really challenging, so I'm hoping maybe being able to try things on at home will help. We' ( Read more... )

I have had good luck with formal stuff from Macy's and Nordstroms.

I've had some luck with Nordstrom's Personal Shoppers for things of this nature, if she is in their size range (which I think maxes out around 26W).

Nordstrom is where I'd go, personally, but if your mom is outside of a 24-26W she might have to go somewhere that custom makes stuff. Something like this might be great on her. How formal is the wedding? What time of day?

For styling tips, look at Gabourey Sidibe, Melissa McCarthy, Nikki Blonsky, and Rebel Wilson - apples all. Silhouettes that look great on them might flatter your mom.

Now you've got me poking around on fancy dress sites. How pretty is this?

This is like the best/worst game ever. I want an excuse to buy all the fancy dresses!

I pinned a few things that I've been looking at for her -- http://www.pinterest.com/lkstrobel/mob-dresses/ -- a couple I already know are the wrong shape, but that one you linked to has a similar vibe to several things I've found, so at least I know I'm on the right track!

How tall is she and approximately what size does she wear now?

She's 5'8" and I'd guess maybe a size 22/24?

Try an A-Line surplice dress with some structure, like these two from Lane Bryant. I tried them on and they looked fabulous- I'm apple shaped.

I bought a wedding dress from Plus Size Bridal in 2006, and had great success with them. It was an Alfred Angelo, but at that time, it was super hard to find less formal wedding dresses (everything was strapless with a big old skirt), and they had an awesome selection. I see that they have a "mothers" section (http://www.psbridal.com/mothers-dresses/?sort=bestselling&page=1) and a bunch of separates as well (which always seem to fit better, and usually you can't tell that they're not all one piece). Mazel tov!
