Big Sexy on TLC

TLC network is launching a new plus size 'reality' show about 4 fat women trying to make it as plus size models in New York. I saw a teaser commercial for the show this morning. From what I saw, it looks like the show partially focuses on the women's lives, and is not just all about fashion and modeling. For info about the show, click here: Read more... )

I hear that - I haaaaaate the term "real woman" with a passion for the same reasons. It implies my skinny friends are what, imaginary?

Be interesting to see if that show makes it onto the TV here in New Zealand.

Agreed. We're all real. :/

The most annoyed I've been with it was when my doctor was trying to be 'buddy-buddy' with me during one of his 'weight talks' and referred to slender women as 'skinny minnies'. I switched docs after that; it really bothered me.

I'm with you, we don't rise by putting others down... and if we're not fighting for a world where ALL women can feel good about thier body, no matter what size or shape it is, then we've already lost.

I understand the motivation behind the "twig" comment and its an easy trap to fall into (and I have myself) but putting other people down to boost your own self-confidence never really lasts does it?

I hope I can *ahem* acquire this show somehow in Australia! Looks really interesting.

Thank you for saying this. I felt the same way while watching the trailer for that show, Chelsea Settles.

From what I know of Mtv, I'd say you're right on the exploitative comment.

It is funny you should post this because I was just chatting with the hubby about the show tonight. I was voicing similar concerns and am curious how they are going to portray these women. I feel like TLC in general has become a modern day freakshow and now it is time to introduce the "bearded fat lady" so to speak. I am trying very hard to not form any opinions until I watch it for myself though.
