Boston Metro Area Fat Group - Part Deux

Aug 17, 2011 11:28

Hi fats! I posted a couple weeks back asking if there was interest in a fat acceptance group in the Boston area. There was, so I started a group at meetup.com. If you're in the area, come join up! It will be totally rad!

Hey! Thanks so much for creating the group! I joined, but have been really busy lately and so can't make it to any planned events so far. Hopefully things will calm down though in the next month or so and I'll be able to come out and meet folks. Again, thanks so much for this! Boston was/is in definite need of more rad fat folks.

Same here---I joined but am sadly unable to go to the first potluck (I'll be at an awesome weekend seminar for arts educators). But I am so, so excited for whatever comes next!

Beyond my partner and my best friend (who lives very far away), I have no FA-aware folks in my life, so I feel like meeting up with a bunch of like-minded (and to a certain extent like-bodied!) people will be pretty transformative.

Hi, I was wondering how you felt about "smaller" fats joining? I'm a size 12, and I'd really like to be part of this, but I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable either!

Well, I'm not the creator of the group, but as a new member I'll throw my two cents in on this. To me, the fact that you're aware of different kinds of fat experience (and different levels of privilege), and you understand and are taking into account that some people might be uncomfortable, means that you seem like somebody I would want there. :)

I think people of all sizes can & should benefit from being in FA communities. There's something to be said for creating "safe(r) spaces" of people whose experiences are more similar, too (i.e. fat folks above or below a certain size, or queer/POC/disabled/etc.), but I don't know if that's specifically the intention here.

Hmm...I'm not sure. I think allies are great! I really want the group to be on the side of consensus-run though, so I don't think my personal feelings should be the deciding factor.

Hi, sorry, I replied in the wrong place. Let me think on it and ask folks at the first meeting. Does that work for you?
