Hey Fatshionistas!
I wanted to do an outfit of the day post that highlighted the ways in which I use a little DIY magic to add some flavor to a sort of everyday "I feel too lazy to wear a dress"* look for me.
I don't wear jeans a lot, but when I do I like a fairly straight leg dark jean. After years of working against my tendency to wear black to "hide" my fatness (let's be honest, I wasn't camouflaging anything) I have come back to embrace black as a nice compliment to my typically flamboyant style.
What I love about this outfit is that I customized it myself with crafts--a rekindled obsession of mine to help with my frustration and make extra cash. The hair bling is something I made using feathers, a fake flower, glitter, spray adhesive, hot glue and a clip. Raw materials probably put this thing at about $1.50. I like that hair bling takes any outfit and makes it fancier (I can wear black but my flamboyance always shines through a little).
I hand embellished these jeans as part of a staff art project we did at
Re/Dress NYC (where I am a Shopgirl). I played around with free fonts online and found a typeface I liked. I spelled out "BODY OUTLAW" and printed it on 8.5 x 11 paper. I took a clear piece of sticky contact paper (before peeling off the back) and traced out the letters with an exacto knife.
I placed the sticky paper on the jeans where I liked the position (meaty thigh area). I then took gold glittery fabric paint and sponged it through the stencil with a cosmetic sponge.
I gave away a pair of these jeans as a giveaway on my blog,
Queer Fat Femme. They are a size 24.
The top in my outfit is an Abby Z long sleeve scoopy/drapey neck cotton number. There's no tag in it--I estimate it to be a size 2X. The retail at Re/Dress NYC is $20.
The shoes are TUK, size 11. $40 from Amazon.com and super great for all day standing while working retail.
I hope this inspires some of you out there to get crafty with your everyday look!
*I totally acknowledge that a lot of people feel the opposite about dresses, but when I feel lazy I like jeans.
