pants rant/warning/pondering

In the awful quest that is finding dress pants for my job interview, I have discovered one thing: maybe I should just stick to the few things in fashion that I know will always fit me and will always be around. That being said, my new uniform will consist of Old Navy XXL v-neck tees, sweatpants, and size 11 low top Converse. /sarcasm

What prompts this sudden realization/conclusion/wacky idea?

So here's the deal. I have a group job interview on Saturday for a family museum (a pretty major one, but I don't want to jinx myself). "What to wear," me thinks. Being a recent graduate, I've never really needed to own a nice pair of dress pants/slacks/trousers, but, as I think many of us do, my first image of a professional interview outfit is nice slacks and a nice top. (Disclaimer: I would just wear a dress or a skirt, but I have a tattoo on my right calf, warranting me to want to cover up for the sake of conservatism). Thus begins my quest! I went to TJMaxx...and nothing. I went to Ross...still nothing. (Yet to try Lane Bryant or Avenue, but I'm running out of time). I went to Macy's, the giant one in SF? Nothing...but one pair of Style & Co. pants in a 20WP. They fit me in the thighs but not the waist (as an "apple" that is the story of my life). Gorgeous!!!...but too small. I politely ask a woman if they have the next size up, to find out that that particular Macy's doesn't carry that brand (they were a return). She printed me up the receipt and wished me luck in finding them at another location. Cut to today, where I find the pants in not only a 22W, but a 24WP! "Surely this will win," I thought as I walked into the dressing room.

Nada. So after getting my hopes up on what would have been the most awesome pants ($10!!!), I find myself wishing for a size 26W...which a) I know they don't carry, and b) would have been too big in my thighs anyway. I'm beginning to think that I might be relegated to a life of tapered, elastic waist stretch dress pants as my only option. *shudders* (Oh yeah, btw? Macy's is ditching both Style and Co. plus sizes and Anne Klein plus size, but neither has their full collection online, so have fun with that).

I headed out to Torrid empty handed (almost bought an $8 dress, but I have trained myself that if I have to spend more than a minute debating to buy something, it's not worth it) to get some skinny pants. I bought the
Tripp black twill skinny pants in a 20S because I had a gift card and because I can wear these all the time and they still look nice enough for an interview, imho. As I purchased my new pants, I contemplated buying another pair of jeans because...

My favorite all time pair of jeans are the Z. Cav Jesse skinny jeans. I purchased them last summer for $20 with a coupon, and only now are they starting to wear a little bit in the thighs. These are the best fitting jeans I have ever bought, and I am sad they are starting to fade away. I saw some at Ross the other day for $15 (not $52) but could not squeeze into the the 20s (I wear the 22s). "Huh," I thought, "I wonder what Torrid closed, or why the manufacturer made excess." At Torrid today, the clerk said that the jeans were $20 off ($32) because THEY WERE BEING DISCONTINUED. I almost cried. I didn't buy them, because I really shouldn't be spending money I don't have ("well, if you got the Torrid Diva credit card...") and because my pair is barely on the brink. But honestly, WTF Z Cav/Torrid? I, unlike some of you lovely fats, do not have wider hips than my waist. In fact, I'm beginning to realize I am shaped like an ice cream cone, and the waffle cone of me is the absolute hardest thing to clothe. I literally wear these pants ALL THE TIME:

They are the one thing in my wardrobe that ALWAYS fit, that always made me feel good, that always made me happy to wear jeans, and now they're gone.

If you lovely fats would do me the honor of answering this question,
Which leads me to the question (other than where the crap do y'all find your dress pants): What is the one item of clothing (or several, whatever) that you absolutely cannot live without? How much was it, how well does it fit, but more importantly How does it make you feel? How would it make you feel if you knew you could never buy it again/get a replacement? How angry does it make you that our fashion options are dwindling even more in this economy? ARGHHHHHHHHH. Thanks in advance for even glancing at this post, or having the smarts to not read it in the first place, haha.
