Fat Girl Fleamarket!

Jul 13, 2006 15:31

I spent the weekend visiting friends in CT and NY and I attended the Fat Girl Flea on Saturday. Driving into the city, we dragged the bags of clothes Boston folks had donated into the LGBT Center.

We followed the signs

until we reached heaven.

How do I know it was heaven? Well, don't you see all that heavenly light streaming in? And don't you see all the lovely fat angels? (Especially the tall one with the dark hair who allowed herself to be "mugged" on the street for her bag of about-to-be-donated clothes. She was my favorite fat angel.)

Three rounds of shopping later, I was Finally All Done.

I got to briefly meet some Fatshionistas, showed off my new and unbelievably comfy underwear to EVERYONE, and shopped until my friends dropped. Hurray for the Flea raising $7000 for Nolose!

Here are some of my Fat Girl Flea finds.

On the far left is a sleeveless Lands End dress. I went hoping I'd find some Summer dresses, so this made me clap! That scoop-necked orange shirt is one of FOUR orange shirts I bought. Orange is a happy, happy color! The sleeveless mock turtleneck on the far right looks blue-ish in this computer, but really is a pewter-ish color and very, very slinky to the touch.

On the bottom right side is a cropped hoodie sweater from MAC. You know the clips used to keep kids' mittens attached to their sleeves? Well, that kind of clip is on this sweater's cuffs and in a slant along its front. I'm not sure where I'll wear it or with what, but stay tuned! The pale orange and the pink Lane Bryant button-downs will be easy work shirts. And I was so excited to find a lime green fleece vest, perfect for throwing on when I ride my bicycle to work in colder weather.

I was definitely drawn to lots of colors this year.

Despite all the hot pinks and flaming oranges of this textured tank top and how comfortable it was on and how easy it will be to wear it to the office on meltingly hot days, I almost threw it back into the mix four times. Maybe it'll show up unworn and confusingly unloved at the next Flea, or maybe it'll assert itself and rule my closet as a future go-to shirt.

I love the soft color and all the fun squiggles on this Avenue three-quarter sleeved work shirt. It kinda looks like someone shrank it in a dryer, but since it was shrunk down to just-right on *me*, that's totally fine!

The cut and design of this tailored shirt makes it hugely flattering on my round little torso. When the days get cooler, I'll take a picture of myself in it to show how nicely it fits!

I pulled this Junonia gently-vee-necked sweater out for a friend of mine, but once I touched it and felt how surprisingly soft and lightweight it was, I had to try it on, and once I tried it on -- even as overheated and flushed as I was -- I couldn't give it up. But no worries, I found a half a dozen other perfect things for my friend and she bought them all! I'm eager to wear this washed-out Monet-ish sweater with a pair of tan work slacks this Autumn.

That fat angel I "mugged"? She had a bag full of INCREDIBLE things and this vivid, beautiful long red skirt with its tiny sprigs of pale flowers and lime green stems was one of them. I totally scored when I ran into her on 7th Avenue. I'm still taken aback by my own brashness, but she was dressed so perfectly and the bag swinging from her hand was calling out to me, "Look inside! Look inside! You know you want to!" I also got an incredible, swirly pink and black Torrid dress from that encounter (I think it has been posted on this LJ before, but I can't find it right now).

I scored a bunch of instant favorites.

Lime green has been singing its siren song to me for a while now. Time to create a lime green section of my closet next to the happy orange section, the sweet pink section, and the good ole' standby black section! This boucle jacket is cut just right for me, nipping in at my waist and letting my hips and belly balloon out below freely. I'm going to try pairing it with the red skirt. :)

My friend who I found some great stuff for kept her eyes open for things for me, too. She and I are well-matched as compatible and (usually) friendly and fair shopping buddies. She said when she spotted this Eddie Bauer white blouse, she immediately thought of me. (Although, she laughed when she told me that and said, "I thought it'd be a great CHURCH shirt for you!" She's always trying to get me to visit her church!) The shirt has a generous scoop neck with a delicate little ruffle, and like the green boucle jacket, hits me just right.

I felt like I should be clambering onto a horse and digging booted heels into roan flanks or something in this little green jacket with the corduroy collar. Tally ho!

J. Jill is always just right. The cut, the color, the feel, the details. :::sigh:::

In this white boucle long jacket (much heavier than the lime green), I feel like I should be teetering on dangerous stilettos and flashing diamonds on my fat fingers. We'll see how it looks this Autumn with my sensible heels and silver rings. :)

This was from the Fat Angel Collection. Perrrrrr-fect! I wore this shirt to work on Tuesday and hummed Partridge Family songs to myself all day.

And I got a bunch of other things that I just haven't had time to document yet! :) It was an exhausting and exciting whirlwind weekend full of friends and fashion. I can't wait until the next Fat Girl Flea!
