Practice Makes Perfect

"Gotta Sing...."

"Sing! Sing a song..."

"Any time's the right time to sing a song ..."

I've got the itch, and it's been too long. Karaoke is once again planned for the 9th of August, and I can't wait!

I started tuning up my voice today, and I will be practicing a variety of songs, until I decide what I want to sing. That is a fun time for me, because I get to go through my process. I imagine myself singing each song onstage, and deciding whether it will work with the others I'm deciding on. I usually do four songs, but that depends on how much I will be singing in the upper register.

My friend "Ms Classical" says that I sing in my "head voice". I guess that means that I automatically begin in a higher register than what SHOULD be normal for me. According to her, I am a bass/baritone normally. However, since most popular music is sung in a higher register, my head voice is where I live and do most of my singing. I suppose it means I have a good range.

The first time I sang for her, she was amazed. Not because I am the "Next Great Talent", but because my speaking voice and singing voice are startlingly different.

She says I'm a reverse Jim Nabors.

I speak in a deep voice like he sings, and I sing in a higher pitch like Gomer Pyle talks.

"Well G-o-o-olly!"

OK, maybe not like Gomer Pyle.

You get the idea.

I've got a big surprise for my good friend Jeff, (the OTHER Karaoke slut), which I know will knock his socks off! He's a classic rock junkie like I am, so I'm going to sing...

AQUALUNG by Jethro Tull!

It's in my range, I am very comfortable with it, even though I have never performed it before, and it's something that I know NOBODY else in the bar has ever done before. I get a big rush hearing the crowd murmur with surprise at my song selections which are usually unique. I am sure this song will be no exception.

But for now, it's practice makes perfect.
